History Talk about Ugly. You have to respect late 1930s styling.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 34 GAZ, Oct 19, 2013.

  1. Man those styling guys had wierd ideas in the 1930s & 1940s. Came across this 1939 Panhard X82 over at prewarcars.com in their BarnFinds for sale list. Only 114 made. How about that windscreen !! Story goes the car was hidden in WWII by it,s French owner and after the war it did,nt get to see much use. Thats where the barnfind bit comes in.

Holy hell. That thing Is incredible. Its like the "How To" book of Art Deco styling!
Too bad it's on the wrong side of the Atlantic.....That would look soooooooo good in a shade of blue so dark you can only tell its not black in direct sunlight, zero metallic or pearl, and all the trim nickel plated instead of chromed.

I'd love to woodgrain that set of moldings. Actually I'd love to restore the whole thing. I'm down with the blue too, but chrome where it already was. Some custom leather/cloth interior work, vintage Michelins...

    Hey, cmyhtrod:

Maybe you thought wrong... :D .

I kinda like them. Wouldn't say they are my favorite, but very interesting to look at, for ideas. &, at least you won't see yourself on every corner. Unlike, say, a ford (or replica of)... :D . No, I'm not knocking yours or anyone elses' stuff here. Just an observation that not everyone likes to blend in... :D .

    That's definitely not ugly.

Just cause something doesn't look like a Chevy or a Ford doesn't make it ugly ;)

I'm fascinated by the door pillars.

I'd like to see how both doors open and don't pinch each other.

That windshield treatment was used over here on mid 30's Hupmobiles

That front glass treatment could be found here on some mid 30's Hupmobiles. The roof arch and door arches look similar also.

Beautiful car. Center hinged doors, A pillar windows, the coolest headlight shape and front wheel skirts!? Besides all that, it has great lines. wow. My new favorite deco ride.

X2, I like it, great lines.

  23. Saw one at Techno-Classical Essen. Big car with a lot of presence. Crying out for a BBC.

Regards the windscreen, my modern daily driver, a Citroën C3 Picasso, has the same arrangement. Works very well - almost like having no A pillar. Visibility is excellent.

This car is the opposite of ugly. I'd restore it and enjoy it. Very unusual.
But where's the barn? Or do you guys call garages barns?
Even if I find a car in a barn I'm not gonna call it a barn find!

Would that be considered a 7-window?

(can't quite see the rear quarters, maybe there's windows there too?)

    I like it.......and the Hupmobile

Reminds me of the old Mad Magazine "artist" Don Martin (IIRC), he had a cartoonish drawing of a car and a scowling old lady at the wheel; titled "Leaving in a Huff"

I can say that I have never seen one before, including the older tan one just posted.

Some of the 30's swoopy French cars are "really something". I say that as a good thing :)

  30. I wouldn't say it was ugly either. Who made them? I have never heard of that car before.
