I'm trying to do a little market research to figure out what "car guy" shows people watch. I have two disadvantages here: one, I don't have cable so I don't watch them myself; two, COMCAST doesn't have ratings by show in my area (Atlanta). I can't believe they don't, but that's beside the point.

I'm trying to target the commercial for my swap meet to a very narrow audience--those who would actually go to my swap meet. In other words, guys like us.

So, what shows do guys like us watch? My best rates are on Speed TV and Spike TV, so if you can keep it to shows on those channels that would help.

Thanks for your help, ya big bunch of couch potatoes! ;)

  2. I stopped watching TV about three months ago. I've lost 15 pounds...

When I did watch Spike TV I'd watch all the automotive shows except that Flex Funkster Master whatever show.

No car shows for me. IMHO none of the shows airing on the tube are very appealing.

  4. Like oldcarmike I figure that its easier to take weight off my butt than off my car. Having said that, I do watch Horsepower TV and Trucks on Spike since they actually show some neat ways of doing things occasionally. I especially like the blooper shows they do as sometimes i feel like I'm the only guy f...... up my car and doing stupid things but the blooper shows those highly paid dudes doing the same dumb things as me, yeah. Also watch occasionally My Classic Car on Speed (aka: the nascar channel) and Two Guys Garage. Occasionally some real good stuff there.

Mainly, if I'm not working for wages, I need the time for garage projects (after the Honey-do list, of course).

I don't get that channel. and I don't want to pay to get that channel.

I do watch DVDs on tv, though.

Hey, Brad! How's it goin'? Gor your Buick done yet? I have cable in the shop, and usually have NASCAR stuff runnin', but I'm not paying much attention to it. I've had TRUCKS on once in a while, and sometimes will scan for something carwise to watch, like two guys garage, or my classic car. I don't go for the shows like overhaulin', maybe just jealous that I can't build a car in 7 days!o

I have to admit, I like overhaulin, rides, monster garage, mainly just to see the people interact. I truely miss junkyard wars, before they started with the musical chairs - hosts bs. That was a good show. I dont watch them much anymore, but tlc/discovery's selection is better, imo.

I usually watch Two Guys Garage as it is filmed locally and I know the guys on the program. I do not think it is long for this world as they have started changing the studio around to do another truck show!

  9. I didn't like Overhaulin' because I didn't like any of the cars they did except for the blue Falcon they redid for that young guy. If one of my cars got the Overhaulin' treatment I'd be really pissed off.

Let me get this straight - You STOLE my car; you tore it apart; bolted on a bunch of stuff I didn't ask for or authorize; you blinged it up; you painted some God-awful paint scheme so now it looks like an automotive streetwalker; and now I have to pay INCOME TAXES on the $60,000 worth of crap you did?

Piss on that!!! Put it back the way it was or I'm filing charges for theft, trespassing, and malicious damage to property against all you bastards!!

Not making this up... I stopped 8 yrs ago.
The only shows I watch is the weather channel to get the next days weather and Cnn when an occasional plane runs into a building or another big wind wallops another shoreline.
All TV is stupid and a waist of time in my opinion. Too many commercials, no realistic and attributable subject matter and all reality shows are about people who dont really know what life is really about. I truly believe it is and was the beginning of the nations moral decay.
Give me a day doing nothing in the garage or hanging out on the Hamb anytime.
We have everything you'd ever want in a tv show.
Cars, builds, humor, drama and downright love and hate.
    Now thats reality!

    Oh wait,you said car shows...
Watched them all,or the ones I found, at least once...don't watch any of them anymore..
Came in late the other night, just missed most of what was on the history channel about hot rods....wish I'd seen it,what I did see looked pretty good..
I guess I like the car stuff that you'll sometimes find on History Channel more than the insipid Boyd shit style shows...
Or maybe I just haven't seen the really good ones...
I'm much more likely to have my XM radio turned up loud, and be playing on the HAMB.
There's nights the TV is turned to the weather channel, sound is down, and I don't even look at it..
TV advertising is a black hole,in my opinion...even with cable rates, you'll have to drown the public in repeat ads to get much effect,I think..
Around here, the Nats South gets a lot of TV ads the week or two before...
Can't imagine that they get enough civilians into the show to pay for the ads..
If you don't know the Nats are coming, and you don't notice all the cars around Knoxville, then you're not likely to go...
Good luck...if any business owner could ever figure out advertising on a budget, they'd make money....too bad most venues are worthless..

I don't get cable and I don't watch car TV except for racing-Indy,NSRA and NASCAR. All of the car shows I have seen never actually show you how to do stuff, always have some self-imposed deadline and always have some mean trick then surprise ending when the owner finds out his car wasn't taken away in a hurricane.

Not a big TV guy either... I'll watch Pinks, Chop Cut Rebuild or Two guys Garage if I stumble across them. I did watch Overhaulin last night but only because it was mentioned here, otherwise I would of never turned the thing on...TC

  16. Pretty much hate all of them, except for a couple of car documentaries I've seen on History Channel, and the occasional "serious car" episode of Monster Garage.

I've caught a couple of episodes of a British car program on Discovery (I think it's called "Drive"), and though it's not hot rod focused, it has this deadpan host who is funnier than hell. The episode where he's trying to break 10 minutes around the Nurmbering in a diesel Jag is a laff riot.

I don't watch to much tv either. I'd rather be on my computer or working on my car. It seems most of the people on this board are here or in their garages in their spare time. I have watched the ones on spike a few times and American HotRod. All pretty lame. I guess I just like traditional cars and those shows don't show that.

Damn dude, did someone piss in you oatmeal?

I haven't seen any car on there that the insiders didn't let Chip know what they wanted. In my case I'm sure my wife would be an insider and wouldn't let him fuck up my cars. Maybe the people that would be you insider would do just to fuck with you.... :D:D:D

Oh and I watch Overhaulin', Monster Garage, Hot Rod TV, and sometimes catch the others.... In my opinion Pinks sucks... I also dig some of the resto shows on DIY TV...

  27. I don't have cable or sat so I was excited when I got to stay in a hotel Thursday night. (it was for work, not the wife kicking me out) They even had speedvision. But guess what? All that was on was some boring auction with idiots yammering on. I came back 2 hours later and they said "We are now replaying the auction that happened earlier tonight." I decided I have been wise to not spring for cable.

I rarely watch any of the shows listed unless I was bored silly before I turned on the tube.
Mostly I catch the NHRA races (that aren't bumped from the posted broadcast times) and some ALMS road course stuff. F1 qualifying is fun to listen to the motors scream.

I do miss Junkyard Wars. Monster Garage is OK once in awhile - the bike shows have gotten old. I want to cut off Dennis Gage's mustache.

As for the rest of TV - I don't watch anything with a plot, as most of today's offerings are just crap! I like History Channel and Dirty Jobs.

Guilty pleasure - Dog, The Bounty Hunter.

Is it me, or does Barry Meguire from Car Crazy seem like hes really full of crap? That guy makes me sick with that stupid smile that never goes away, and every other word out of his mouth is "payshun" (translation: Passion). Besides that, a good 20% of the show is a giant Meguires advertisement.

I happen to like American Hot Rod despite the shit Boyd seems to get. I would never want to own one of the cars he builds, and the drama gets to me, but AH has the least filler BS out of all of them.

Overhaulin needs to be retitled "The Chip Foose Worship Hour". Call him what you want, he may have talent, and there is obviousely a lot of people who care for his designs, but that whole show is all about talking up foose like he's some god. I dont like his designs at all, some may. I do put the show on the TV when its on, but I cant sit and watch it anymore. I uaualy just do other things and occasionaly peak at the TV. The host and hostess of the show are so phoney and rediculous, and the "trend" of putting 22" wheels on 50's and 60's cars makes me sick. My dad always teases me that hes going to have one of my cars "Overhauled", as oldcarmike said, if it were done to me, id be pissed. I wonder if they would air a show if the owner walked in, and told Chip his car design sucks, and now hes goota sell the ugly shit he did.

What about MTV's Pimp My Ride? Just kidding....

Yeah, the shows I listed are in my price bracket for advertising in the Metro Atlanta area. Spike is $70 for a 30-second spot, Speed is $40. No minimum buy, and I can run the commercials on any show at any time.
The Discovery Channel and the other ones are like $800 for a 30-second spot! YIKES! So no "N.E. Georgia Swap Meet" commercials during the Chip Foose, Boyd Coddington or Orange Country Choppers Celebrity Worship/Dick Wagging Hour.
Thanks for the input everyone! I'm really surprised to see that My Classic Car seems to be the most popular. I wouldn't have guessed that at all.
Damn the HAMB is great! Where else can the little guy get market research like this?
