Definitely looks dana/spicer. Can't see clair enough on my phone but looks similar to a 44. The ribs on the housing are throwing me off but shout make it easier to identify

  6. Not GM 10 bolt, more likely a Dana44. Look at the drain plug. It says Dana44 style

    What's the bolt pattern?
Spacing between the vertical bolts isn't right for a 10 bolt

My guess woulf be an 80s jeep cherokee/xj dana 44. Would be 5x4.5 pattern unless shafts were replaced.

Good axle if it is a xj 44. Alloy shafts are easily found for dual pattern 5x4.5 and 5x5.5. Interchange with the jeep tj (97-06 wranlger) 44 shafts. Just need drum retainer which is very common.

  11. My Dana 44 housing has those same ribs. Mine is out of a late 70's jeep with 6-lug wheels. They came either way 5-lug or 6-lug.

[IMG]That rib above the tube centerline is what is getting me. Here is the xj 44. My knowledge off 44 is limited to xj/tj rear axles and fsj/tj and ford fronts which is only a few of the 44s made.

I can tell you with a good confidence that the original pic doesn't look like a gm axle do to the diff cover. Ribs on the gms look parrallel and on the 44 they are angled towards the yoke and above/below the tube as they go back

Thanks...wish I had the axle in front of me for casting numbers etc. The GM stamped the axles on the passenger side tube...did the 44 do the same?

I think the did also. Unfortunately I'm limited to my rockcrawling days. Visual identification was more common then stampings. But we only use a handful of axles and the only gm is typically a full float 14 bolt.

Edit..iirc dana casts its model number in a webbing by the diff cover.

    Good reading http://www.differentials.com/technical-help/differential-identification

If it is, it will have discs, and be 6-lug.

Looks an awful lot like my Dana 44.

What is the bolt pattern for the wheels? Is it the original pattern? To the ends of the axles look like this:

    Or this:

Nut in the middle, or no nut in the middle?

Looks like a Dana, probably a 44, which was used in about a billion different applications, from Checker cabs to GMC pickups and early T birds etc

not enough info in that pic to identify what it's out of...
