Man, your friend was really lucky! The only vehicle I have an extra kill switch in is my Corvette. It has a couple safety switches in the dash, but that master power kill switch is near the driver's reach because you just never know. And like has already been mentioned, the crap happens so quick you just don't react as fast as you think you do. I'm sure the force from slamming a solid object had some help in shearing those engine mount bolts. I'm sure that was a check your pants ride for sure!!!

Well this has gotten people talking and thats what I wanted to do,get some input on how this can be avoided for someone else. Thanks all for the suggestions.Iam 99% sure this was a linkage problem. After he reached for the key and saw it wasnt there the death grip took over and the rest all happened in a blink.
One of many positives out of this is my friend will get a chance to toally rebuild it and fix other issues that needed attention.None quite as bad as this but while its apart,do this, this ,and this. He,ll bring a spare set of undies next trip too!!!

  3. Ha! in the south that was the "traditional" equivalent to "krogers" back in the day:D

  4. That's great that you pal will be able to address any problems he might find and repair all the damage that was incurred when he came to that sudden stop.

I'm glad you took the time to make this post,,it's got a lot of people thinking and that's a good thing,,even guys that built their cars and have had them on the road for years can get complacent. HRP

Thanks for the post, and I'm glad he survived to tell the tale!
I have kill switches, and a battery disconnect within reach of the drivers seat, but not sure in that situation I'd have time to use them while trying to stop and steer the car!

I was there when it happened. The motor and tranny all slid forward, Both motor mount bolts sheered off forcing the motor into the radiator.
