History Barn Find Brand New 215 Buick V8

I have always loved these motors. I search the list every once and a while but they are few and far between. The other night I happened on an add saying "New on factory create". I called, drove and bought. It was a 76 year old man who told me he had purchased the motor in 1964 brand new for a corvair project. Of course I don't believe everything I hear but with no tools and only my eyes and fingers I bought the motor on the "factory" skid carb to pan. He told me he had never ran the motor and it's literately sat since 64 in his garage. Everything appeared to be so. After getting the engine home and digging further all this seems to hold true. I've pulled the plugs and valve cover. It's brand new. Under the dist cap, brand new. In the carb, brand new. No evidence of ever being run. I'm half tempted to pull the rocker assembly and see if there are any marks on the valve tips or rockers. If this motor is in fact a brand new NOS 1963 Buick 215 well I sure don't want to be the one to run it. I was gonna turn it over until I noticed the TDC marks lined up. I don't want to touch it. Blow off the rat turds and maybe get it to someone or place that will display it or something. This thing needs to live on in it's "new" form. What say you guys? Are there any Buick guys or retired guys that can shed some light on this?


Did they put these plastic caps on back then from the factory?

 

It's got a clutch in there. How common was this? What is the bolt pattern? I have a chevy 3 speed and np465 4x4 4 speed sitting, will they bolt up?

 

We had covers on all carbs that were in the factory when got there in 64. The TBI units of the 80's up had a cover also.

 

???? The value of that engine is near zero as a some sort of display item. Take it apart, clean it all up, and reassemble it then use it.

 

Run the tar out of it! That's what it was built for...

 

Run it. It aint new. Its just a never run engine coated in rat turds.

 

I think you ought to put it in Corvair.

This is why I buy all my stuff already used, worn out, hacked up, modified or rusted. Avoids the 'I shouldn't touch it' conundrum. Well that and it's cheaper.

Blue print it and hook it up to a Muncie 4 sp in a 62 F-85, on the other hand I had a guy bring a Power Glide trans to my shop in the late 80's. It proved to be a NEW never installed HD Glide for a 327/409 application, have it in a display case in my show room. The guy took 50 bucks and I gave him a company check.

 

Great find. I would build an open hood hot rod for it. Just a decade ago, you could still get a 2x2 intake for those, I think Edelbrock or Offy maybe.

 

What trans do you think will bolt to the back of that bell housing?

 

It was made to run not be a statue.

 

Run it or sell it to someone that will. FYI, that's the small pattern bellhousing, and I think the only thing that bolts up to it is the factory Borg Warner 3-speed trans. There is also a dual pattern bellhousing that has the pattern for the BW three speed as well as the Saginaw/Muncie 4-speed pattern. See pic attached for a dual-pattern example

 

DO NOT blow rat turds or any other rodent droppings off anything ever. Those critters carry the hantavirus and 2 out of five people who get it die. When you blow or vacuum or sweep the droppings the spores become airborne and attack your lungs. The first symptom is light headedness - a spaced out echoey thing. Then it attacks the urinary system - imagine pissing sulphuric acid. Shortly after the chills and the fever kicks in and you want to curl up in a ball and die - a temperature of 104˚F is the norm. Oh yeah the kidneys get attacked and then it goes into your lungs. If you are lucky you may survive but the virus is them dormant and can and will reactivate out of the blue and it starts all over again as you now have a weakened immune system....

No hantavirus in Ohio.

 

I'm a Buckeye native, and though the Ohio Dept. of Health says no known cases in Ohio, there have been deer mice that do contain the antibody discovered there. I wouldn't take any chances, from the poles to the equator.

 

How about flushing them out with water? seems that would not let it become airborne.

 

We have loads of these motors here. They were fitted in lots of Rovers , Range Rovers , some Sherpa Ambulances. Most had Bw35, Bw65, and GM180 boxes. The GM box was always thought to be the box to have (strongest).

New old stock anything always fascinates me...that thing is badass. clean it and display it. All the novalty is in the fact that its still on the crate and never used....the minute you fire it, its just like all the rest of them. I say, keep it inside and build another one....either way; killer score.

I ran across one of these a number of years ago, (brand new never been run) turns out it had been donated to a school for instructional purposes. GM was proud of these when they first came out and donated a lot of them to schools. Every threaded hole in all the castings was worn out from being disassembled and reassembled 100s of times. Pure junk!

A Chevy t-5 will go on there, must drill out slightly from sae to t-5 metric.

 

I have one of those in a track roadster,sure runs sweet.
