Jack Fuller (Fuller's Frames & Axles/ "Jacksanddeuces" on the HAMB) dropped a '33-'36 axle for me, then I drilled it and peaked it.
Is there a basic formula for a dropped axle regarding resulting width - i.e. when an axle is dropped say 3 inches - is there a predictable reduction in overall width so when the finished set up with fenders is done - the resulting tire to fender lip clearance is reduced by a certain amount - a lesser track?
Another vote for Okie Joe. He did a 3 1/2" stretch-drop for my Phaeton... ...even with the core charge, the whole shebang was cheaper than a new aftermarket axle. Why would anyone do anything else?
3" drop Model A axle by "296V8". Cheaper than a catalog axle and way better lookin. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Okie Joe web site is joesspeedshop.com I'm Nostalgia Sid's www.droppedaxles.com I drop 1937-64 Fords and all other makes of I-beam axles.
Jason at Bare Metal Kustoms (alliance vendor: Early Wheels) dropped the original axle to my '29 cabriolet 2-1/2" I had a MorDrop from Vic Hubbard on the car in the early sixties, but kept my original intact until recently in case I ever wanted to restore the car. My recollection of the MorDrop was a more forged and hammer beaten piece. I kept my 46-48 spindles for fifty+ years, but I cleaned up the arm drops.
i'm thinking about drilling my dropped `33-`36 axle for my next project. yours looks great. i count 18 holes in yours? what size holes and spacing do you have?
It's amazing what 3 more years makes! The Bonneville car is resting, and that original dropped Model A axle with the twisted letters is under my Model A!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=747461 Which has been running for the past six months with a totally non HAMB friendly v6... While you guys are probably walking the same line... I've been all over the map! Call it hot rodding... Sam p.s. I still stand by my beliefs about aesthetics and perspective...
I'm loving this post. I'm usually a traditional snob but I happened onto a repop axle on the cheap and I think I'm gonna have to use it. Its saving grace is its chrome and filled so I think it can pass. My absolute favorite look is the dropped and filled heavy. They look super chunky which some folks say is a negative but it looks more "hot rod" to me. After all the axle of the car is pretty out front and accounts for a good amount of its personality. Heres a shot from a 50's B Movie with my favorite axle Close up shot
I've had 3 axles from 296V8, a 36, a 32 heavy and the Model A in my above post and they were all really nice. Both ends are consistent, nice graeful bends. He does great work.
My personal opinion is that repop axles are a bit too perfect and don't quite look 'right' but a dropped axle is traditional so I wouldn't go as far as to say they were not traditional. For my T I decided to go with a model A axle, made a jig and dropped it three and a half inches myself... David
I dropped this axle almost thirty years ago, I did it with the sledge hammer I am holding in the photo. That's the reason it was almost thirty years before I did another one (above) David
