What was your first speed equipment part?

A air research twin turbcharged big block chevy kit bought from a farmer back in 79 it was a wild ride.Had it in a 54 f100

 

A set of finned aluminum heads and headers for my 51 Ford---heads were Evans, I think. Headers were an unknown.

 

My first speed equip part is a 'glass tilt front end for a 68-9 GTO bought on my 15th birthday. Did not own a car yet but, knew what I wanted... Still have it.

 

I talked my Dad into letting me buy a Spark-O-Matic floor shift for his '59 Ford. Knocked a tooth off first gear the same afternoon I got it installed.

 

Set of headers for my '69 Chevy short bed when I was 17. Coincidentally, the first part my dad bought was a set of headers for his '71 GMC long bed when he was 17.

A B&M shift kit for my mostly stock 72 dodge dart with a 318/904. That little 2bbl 318 would chirp the tires going into 2nd gear after I put the shift kit in!

It Was in the early 60's, '62 or '63 maybe and it was a Hurst Competition Plus shifter. It had the rare split barrel shift knob.
I bought it from a casual friend that needed money for a crate full of Turkish cigarettes he was buying from some low-life connection of his that worked the Boston Docks.
I didn't even own a drivable car at that point in time and no one was sure of the correct application for the shifter.
I just had to have it for a bedroom wall ornament.
A week or so later he also sold me a pair of '53 Buick headlight bezels and a beautiful 5 hole engine turned dash panel of unknown make to continue fueling his Turkish weed habit.
A month later I bartered a partially finished and machined, fresh build, '53 Flathead V8 with a 4 barrel intake and carb. It had a cracked main cap from incorrect installation. I gave "weed boy" $12.00 bucks for it.

A couple of years later I was away at college and my parents sold their home and my stuff was "lost"

there was a Chrome Dropped Axel in the window I wanted I think it was $75.00
that was about a months pay

 

Tunnel ram and 2 Holley 600s for a 1960 352 FE solid lifter "Police Interceptor" engine. Installed the engine in a very nice 1959 Galaxy 2 dr hardtop that I paid all of $10 for the body. Those were the days.

 

I purchased a wrecked 1958 Pontiac with 389 try power...I puled the engine and put it in my 1955 Chevy sedan.... Then began to replace broken trans and rears. later I installed the rear from the 58 and got a M 22 and fixed the breakage problems. I would love to have that car back today. It was my all time favorite

Back in 1967, a Hurst competition plus shifter after putting a 4-speed in my 55 Ford Victoria.

 

Only speed equipment I have ever used is my own made stuff which I have called "Cadflat", these items have been inspired thru necessity since there was not all that much stuff out there when I first started looking.

My 1st was to make a timing cover,
Second valley plates and
finally header exhaust system.

Hilbirn injection for a wedge mopar. At a farm sale for ten bucks complete. I was 12 years old sold in college for a enough to buy book for two semesters

Stp sticker, bought at local speed shop when I was 7-8 years old, in around 1970 or so, I think it cost .25 cents ? I was a bit scared walking in and asking to buy a sticker for my bicycle , but made it out of there alive, lol !

 

mr gasket 3 inch chrome aircleaner for my 62 chevy truck inline six. I think it pushed it into the 24:00 in the quarter mile. LOL

 

My first was a Edelbrock dual quad intake for the 283 in my '57 Chevy. It came from a friend and was never installed. Always short on funds in the 60's, so NOS used was a big money saver!

 

Speedometer for my Schwinn Traveler 3 speed shift bicycle, around 1958 or so. Also added head lite and tail lite, handle bars turned over for speed look, added thin wall tubing for dual exhaust and various decretive lights, reflectors, etc, used old baseball cards w/ clothes pins on spokes for exhaust rumble. Funny, Nothing has changed, still adding or removing something to improve things IMO. John

Stiffer lower springs, harder shocks, poly suspension bushings for my OT Limey car. Got a purty cast aluminum valve cover at about the same time.

 

I bought a 49 Dodge business coupe from granny Roupe for $100. It was in very nice shape. I took the exhaust manifold off and split it to have duals exhaust. That cost me $4.00. Then when I went in the Army Dad had the car put in a crusher, made in a block and set where I would park my car. When I came home and seen what he had done I never said a word. I saved my money and bought a 57 Plymouth Fury for $750 in excellent shape. I never did ask Dad why he had my car crushed.

 

Stuffer plate and pyramid reed valves for my West Bend 700 in my Ruttman mini bike. But being young and dumb- I didn't know you should remove stock reeds! Still ran faster than I should have been going.

 

Clifford headers for a 1969 Ford 240 six in 1977 or 1978. Then I had a muffler shop make a dual exhaust system with turbo mufflers. Both pipes came out the right side just in front of the rear wheels.

 

Split manifold on my 50 Chevrolet. Maybe not faster, but sure sounded cool.

I bought a brand new 1968 Chevy II Nova Super Sport when I was stationed at Ft Jackson, SC, after returning from Vietnam at the end of 1967. About the first thing I did was install a Sun Super Tach on the steering column. Can't say it made go any faster, but it sure looked cool.
