on the south side they cut a drive shaft and welded it on the end echo cans they called them painted black or silver . the other was flat megaphones
Either pencil tips or it was pretty common for guys to run the exhaust through the bumper at that time as well. Here are three examples from a mid '50's car show with the exhaust run through the bumper in some manner. Photo courtesy of Rikster.
In my studies of 50's customs, pencil tips were very widely used and look perfect. The size of the pencil tips is just as important as the pencil tip itself.... On most of the 50's customs they are tiny 1 3/4". Just a small detail and they look killer peeking out from under the bumper.
Probably not but Exhaust size is more relative to CID and horsepower. if your running near 460hp then 2 1/2" exhaust is totally necessary To avoid the risk of further derailing your thread..... Thanks I greatly appreciate your help. The 2nd link, the Patriot tips, are appealing to me since many others neck down a lot on the inlet side and I'm coming from 2.5" duals down to these tips. I'll give those a try and report back. So just like 2 inches sticking out? That's what I'll do.
I just did a quick look through my collection of little mags. I pulled several at random from the fifties and early sixties and scanned every rear-shot photo. I found pencil-tips aplenty, but lots of other choices, too. The pencil tips came in narrow and wider widths, as well. I saw several turn-down tips, and a few angled cuts. I found one really cool chrome angular tip with an oval opening shape that probably came from a J.C Whitney-type catalog. I seem to remember that the flat exhaust deflectors were popular in the fifties (I grew up in NY), but didn't see any in the pics. But the most popular per the pics? Rusty exhaust pipe!
Do you think those Patriot tips are really 2.125" or is it a typo and they're really 2.25"? I have 2.25 tailpipes and I'd sure like a set of those tips if they'd fit! (My tailpipes show, so I can't just reduce them down to a smaller diameter without it looking really odd.)
I guess I'm not what some people would call Traditional. I have 6" stainless steel echo cans on the back of my '40 coupe. Are they traditional, no but are they intimadating, get lots of comments, and loud, yes.
I can get pencil tips in either chrome plated or stainless steel sizes from 1 3/4" - 3" if anyone is interested.
