    50 Fraud,
The quarter windows are fixed in a channel with a spring loaded pin that locates in the top framework. The front windows are power operated. A couple pictures of the top.

Wow. How'd I miss this one? I'd love to do something like this on one of my (long term) projects, a '40 Tudor. In fact I think my pickup may be let loose soon so that I can get on and do some cutting and hammering. :)

I really like what Tony and Don are doing with the 40 conv. Just what Ford should have done. Enhancing an already terrific car. Can't wait to see it finished. But I am not a fan of "custom" 39/40's, at least not 'till seeing dechromeds daughters car. Wow. Need to see more of it, maybe start another thread?

Nice work on that hood. Lots of welding and grinding. Give us more.

I'll get into more of the construction details later but I'll give you a little teaser right now.

We've been working a lot on Tony's grille. A lot of design work with Tony on exactly how it should look, a lot of planning and engineering on how to make it happen, and a lot of tedious physical work to actually build the grille.

We still have some finishing to do but we just gave it a trial fit and we're all pumped about how bitchin it looks.

The idea was to build a grille that looks very much like a 40 Mercury grille but styled to fit the 40 Ford and proportioned to this particular custom.

Wow, what a work of art! I can't even draw something like that up in my mind's eye, much less being able to execute it. I can't wait to see the finished product.

As the owner of a 40 convertible I couldn't agree more. It reminds me of a prairie schooner on the Oregon trail. I wish I had the skills and the funds to do that top treatment to my car. BTW, the whole car is absolutely bitchin, can't wait to see more....

Thanks for the suggestion, Jimmy, but no. I don't think I can explain my preference in "apparent dynamism" (I just made that up), but I prefer the more upright line on the wheel opening.

Funny, somebody made identically the same suggestion a year ago. Maybe you?

Funny, I like the swept back arches, but can understand you liking the way it is now. I think the look is something inherent with a few successful looking radical customs from the 50's? Maybe? I like 'em how they are too.

    Tony,

Are you going to run a chrome strip down the center of the hood?

Yes. My intention is to run the strip down through the grille like a '40 Merc, and all the way back to the cowl like a '40 Ford, with a simplified version of the '40 Std hood ornament at the nose. Because of the multiple surgeries to the hood, all of this will probably have to be handmade.

I'm with you Jimmy, the swept arches seem to "fit" the lines of the car better. But Tony sure has some bitchin' cars so he certainly shouldn't listen to me! Listen to you? Yes. But not me, I'm a nobody! :D

What did you decide on running 40 Merc bumpers versus 40 Fords?

The rear is a hybrid '40 Merc/'49 Chev license frame, recontoured to fit the tail of the '40. The front is still a '40 Ford, although if I found a nice '40 Merc front I'd reconsider using it. Both of them are visible in the more recent pictures.

I like the wheel openings following the shape of the wheel. IMO trailing the edges back disrupts the 'vibe' of the car.

Funny how we can feel so differently about such a small detail. Whatever happens, we all know the finished product will blow us away.
