The OP's question reminds me of how "All Chevy Wagons are Nomads" and "It's from a Corvette" (when referring to the mouse motor). Also, there's more "real" Super Sports out there than Chevy ever made.

The Big Window on Task Force Trucks were for deluxe models which had extra exterior stainless trim. They were not consider "Custom Cabs". Chevy didn't start using that until the 60s and only the 58s and 59s are Apaches. And all Cameos are basically a Deluxe model with fiberglass bed sides.

The wording used my be incorrect, but I can assure you my '57 (dad bought new) is a Big window, no exterior trim nor one chromed dash knob...rules it out being a Deluxe cab;)

  4. That is correct. Just like not every big window is Cameo, a big window doesn't necessarily mean it is a deluxe cab either (chrome knobs, stainless trim, etc).

I pulled trim for my old 57 off a small window big truck (atleast a 1 1/2 ton). They were out there just not the norm.

Just a side note, GMC's version of the Cameo, was called the Suburban Carrier.

I read somewhere that earlier models of the task force 4x4s were sent to napco by GM to be modded as a factory option. It was only later that they did it in house.

The recent episode of Fast and Loud in which they did a '56 Nomad for Dale Jr had an advertising clip from the 50s as they talked about the history of the Nomad. Only problem was the clip showed a '55 Handyman 2 dr wagon, not a Nomad. Idgits!

From what I understand the tailgate latches were the same as the ones used on the Corvair Rampside truck.

These gates open like a standard gate, however utilize latches and retractable wires similar to those used on station wagons. The trucks themselves are awesome custom fodder and if you view the little pages from the late 50's body shops typically did these up to advertise. In the issue of Rodder's Journal where they took a look at the show car scene there's a paneled out one. I have also seen them with Buick taillights installed as well.

For an idea #'s of cameo vs all truck based platform production. IIRC there is nothing in the VIN stating cameo, so if you had a big back window and all the Cameo parts, you could make it a Cameo. I don't know about all years[56,57,58], but ALL 55 cameos first numbers were 255K. That was a second series,55,kansas city truck which is where all 55 were built. All 55's were either cardinal red and white or white and red. In the 80's I owned the 14th truck built. 6 cylinder ,automatic.

  21. Funny.

Hey Bill! Again, you did a great job getting it to Coutts. Thanks for your professionalism. In hindsight, I kind of wished your trailer didn't have the rock shield/air dam. It may have blown off/out the illegal aliens. I'm still hunting down spiders and burning egg sacks!!!

  22. Believe it or not, that is always a concern for me reaching under to attach straps to rear axle & front suspension... snakes, rats & poisonous spiders!! so far I have been lucky!!

  23. Any idea what this one is....... and should I be concerned???

    It did crunch good though........

  24. WOW!! If I see too many more like that, I might need to consider an occupational change!!

I read some where the 58 Cameos came to be because the was something like 1800 left over Cameo beds in 57 so that is why the Deluxe trimed fleetsides was not introduced until 59. I got lucky and found a deluxe Fleetside bed on Craigslist by accident.

This was my Dad's 55 shortly after it came to me. I still need to send those wheels back to the 80s.
