History What Is This Show Car?

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by MannyK, Sep 3, 2013.

  1. While looking at the new Hot Rod Deluxe Special magazine, I saw a picture of the February 1960 Grand National Roadster Show. The magazines focus was Ed Roth's Car. But I noticed the Corvette in the background. This corvette has tailfins and roof scoops. Its the coolest Vette I've ever seen! What is it called? And are there anymore pictures of it? Thanks!

It looks to me like an early version of Ron Agguire's X Sonic

The car later had a bubble top and electronic controls for the top and steering I think.

I think it's an early version of the X-sonic. Often credited as being the first car to have hydraulic suspension.

    EDIT Damn I'm slow!

  7. Wow! I love it! It would be so cool to make a clone of it in this first stage. Thanks everyone!

As mentioned above MannyK, that is the X-Sonic the best looking custom corvette ever to scrape the surface of this earth ;)

Ron Aguirre and I worked on the history of his old custom shortly before he passed away as he wanted Kustomrama to be the official source for the X-Sonic. I was thrilled and honored to read those words from Ron as I have been a fan of the X-Sonic for many years! You can see what we cooked together here:

The story is continously growing as new info and photos are discovered :)

The fender fins look a lot like the ones on the R&C "Dream Truck".

  14. Personally I dig the early version pictured here over the bubble version, and I'm a real fan of the bubble top cars.

I'm not a bubble top guy at all... And I prefer my corvettes to be race cars... but I love this version for some reason:

Wasn't there a spread a few years ago in The Rodders Journal? I know I read something about a custom corvette in there and if I remember right it was the x-sonic. I also believe that there was something in the issue that said it had been found also anyone else remember this?

    That's not the "first" stage......more like 3rd or 5th....
I have studied many pics of this car and it's various iterations and every one of them are bitchin'! Being a big fan of fogged paint it's later versions with the bubble were just outta sight man....just imagine driving that to the local burger joint then? Or NOW?:D

There's at least four other custom Corvettes in the background of that pic. Where are they all now? A custom Corvette like this definitely tops my list of dream cars.

  21. Thanks SinisterCustom! These are great pics! By the way, I love your T!

Not meaning to be OT, but the one next to the X-Sonic was built by Bertolucci, and has a wonderful Ferrari GTO influence.

The yellow one, Ron Rodden's, was also uniquely styled. Like the X-Sonic, it too had a mean set of fins!
They, however, curved inward instead of out.

Well, since this is your thread, you may also like Bob McNulty's finned '55.
I found this pic on Kustomrama, but there are no pictures there of it's later version, with much refined front end styling. (Kaiser grille?) I'll look around and see if I can find a pic somewhere.

Bob fashioned the hood and side scallops for this car from aluminum, in order to be able to louver them.

McNulty also did the work on Bob Moreira's '57, with a Stude Hawk grille.

Speaking of Vettes, this Winfield-built '56 is pretty darn cool if you ask me.

  28. I think its something George Jetson would love to have been in. This car is out of this world and eons before its time!
