stock 283 runs fine, but when i turn the ignition off, the engine keeps running. any ideas? bad ignition switch? bad ignition? actually was thinking about swapping over to an electric ignition and installing a Pertronix Ignitor as well...maybe this will knock out two birds w/ one stone?

Do a search. There's a diode you can splice in that will probably fix what you're trying to explain.

Sure it's not carbon build up and it's continuing to fire even with the ignition off. You may want to pull the intake and take a look.

First ? do you have a alternator ? if so did you just install it? Yes to both try disconecting the large wire of the alt. it should then qiut. No alt =bad switch most likely or done any thing to the starter latey? If so maybe the ign.resistor bypass wire is making contact with a hot source.

As is usual for JohnE, this short list should just about cover most reasonable possibilities. DD

Thanks for the help. No Alternator. Haven't touched the starter. I will change out the switch to see if it solves the issue. Keep you posted.
    Thanks again.

i did that one time with a new alt. turns out the field wire was wired backwards in the alt. just had to turn it around.

Sounds like 'bout time to trace that wire hooked to the POS (+) coil terminal backwards and see what it is connected to. Does it actually have voltage on that + terminal with the ignition switch in OFF position? DD

With the ignition switch in the off position and the engine still running, remove the wire at the ballast resistor that is fed from ignition switch. If it kills engine then ignition switch is bad. If still runs, then bypass wire from starter solenoid still has 12v on it and you may have a bad solenoid or a short to 12v.

BTW: How do you shut it off now?

  10. Does it keep running like in firing and running or is it dieseling.

If it is deiseling it can be because it is idling too fast or it is hot or carbon buildup in the combustion chambers.

If it is running on like you never shut it off suspect the ignition switch, check at the back of the switch with a volt meter with the switch on and the switch off, is you ignition/run wire hot when it is turned off? If so replace the switch. If not nect go to the hot wire on your coil, it is charged? then you have a wiring problem, something is bleeding back from the battery. Start at your genny or alt and work your way out until you find the culprit.

If it keeps running for real, not run-on, remove the pink wore from coil positive. If it now shuts off with the key the Pink bypass wire is shorted to batter, probably near the starter. If it won't cut off probably the switch but you will need to trace it back to be sure.

Do you have an electric fan? Could be running as a motor instead of a fan.

what do you do to cut it OFF, that's were your trouble is,

  14. And as much as we would like you to buy one of our PerTronix Ignitor kits, that alone will not solve your problem. You need to cure this first.

Miswired voltage regulator. check it out.
Your feeding the ignition off the arm term.
I'd bet that if you turned the headlights on after you turn the ignition off the engine will stop.

Can the solenoid short out and cause constant voltage to the coil?,snip the yellow wire coming from the solenoid at the coil and see if that will shut it off.
