I'm just getting into car collecting, after growing up with a 72 Ford F100 Custom with 460/4-barrel carb. Still miss it. So I have an opportunity to buy a 57 Chevy pickup for $6,000, but I need to understand if what I'm being told is legit. Seller says it's "Registered as 57, fender emblems say 3100 apache." But after researching on collectors forums, it doesn't look like the Apache model came out until 58. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks so much! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App! Here's a photo. Chopped 4" off the cab (which I believe is a bad thing). But like I said, seller says it's registered as a '57, but has 3100 Apache on the fenders.
The Apache moniker was not used until the 58 model year, unless I'm mistaken (again). That looks like it's a 3/4 or 1 ton truck - not the 3100 which was a 1/2 ton short bed. If the bed is 89", it's a long bed half ton. If the bed measures 97", it's a 3/4 or 1 ton. Regardless, I'm betting someone switched emblems, or fenders, or a bunch of stuff. Don't have my VIN codes here at the office, but you should be able to check them out pretty easily if you can get the info off the seller. - J
Does it really matter at this point, considering how the truck was modified? But, the 55(2nd series), 56, and the 57 Chevy trucks were known as Task Force trucks. The Apache came along in 58 with the quad lights.
Woah-looks like a 57 from what little I can see of the front end, but it could be a 58 or 59 with a 57 front clip. ItT is also, IMO, ugly. Save the 6k for something else.
You guys are great. Yes, it's been significantly modified to more of a hot rod. My son thought it was the coolest thing he's seen (15 year old musician), so I thought I could take it on as a project for the two of us. But I like the idea of saving the money on something I can get a return on later, if we ever decide to sell it. Here's the rest of the description: rebuilt 454 with aftermarket chip, cam, intake, headers, dual flomasters CUSTOM GAUGES CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY CAB HAS 4 INCH CHOP 4L60E AUTO Trans with overdrive, and independent front suspension 4X4, 3/4 TON 8 ft bed New ball joints, fresh brakes, KYB monomax shocks, New alternator, starter, radiator, plugs, wires, and lifters
Junk for that kind of money, their are lots of those trucks around for way less. I wouldn't even make a offer on it.
Yeah, for 6large, I'd look for something better.....and certainly something more suited to this forum.
Shall we presume the cab was set on a newer frame? If your son wants a 4X4 and can afford the gas, go for it.
Run. The other way. Fast as you can. That truck is uglier than a man's ass. JH Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
what does the VIN on the "A" pilar say? And I'm gonna guess there isn't one because of the chop, and the VIN on the frame is gone because of the IFS, so there is no VIN there either, so good luck with whatever it is.........
Flat Black, red wheels and white walls....it SCREAMS Trad Hot Rod!!! Seriously, IF it is a factory 4X4 it may be worth a second look. $6K is still high, but if it could had for less.....
Sounds (and looks) like a $6,000 pile of problems to sort out. Want a modified mid '50s Chevy truck? Buy a stock one and modify it the way YOU want it to be.
Yeah, that is a long bed step side (less desirable). This project truck should be going for around $2,000-$4,000 depending on where you are in the US regardless of the "mods" or upgrades when the exterior looks like that (probably hiding a lot of bondo). looks thrown together and/or someone ran out of money... either way it looks like shortcuts probably were made. Don't even bother looking at that anymore, 55 dude and the others are right. I agree with the rest of the guys here: for $6,000 you can find a hell of a nice truck on the HAMB and for the most part people here are honest in their listings since we are all car guys. Even if 6k is over your price range the listings on here are generally more ball park to what they are actually worth..
Just talked to seller to let him know I wouldn't pay what he was asking. He said he'd consider any offer, so I told him I couldn't pay any more than $3K, and that I'd still have to see it and a vin. He said he'd take $3,500, and gave me the vin. A57O122322. Sure enough, 57 Chevy 1500 Series assembled in Oakland, as far as I can tell. So, like some of you said, the body was thrown/pieced together. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I wouldn't buy anything that is in primer unless it is gutted where you can see from the inside of the truck and see that filler isn't hiding holes or massive damage. The bed on the truck would be anyone's guess
