OK, we need to get these rear fenders that have been straightened and put away installed.

Man, these fenders are huge>

 

Yeah, looks like the weight alone should lower the rear a couple inches.

 

With all of the color discussions, I have have to say the green on the firewall is lovely.

After all the drama with the chop, the resolution of the issue sure has been rewarding (to see in pictures, at least).

This is the solid rear gravel deflector that came with the '46 Merc parts (post#728). Bill Dyson's (48 Ragtop) words have been stuck in my head for months, "that gravel deflector is about an inch below that trunk opening".

Jer, what's the story in those exhaust dumps? There HAS to be a Jesse story behind those, right?

I didn't ask Jesse about how he came up with this idea about the header dumps (my bad), I will. He just said that it was a quick/fast way to open up those headers when the racers arrived at the preordained site to race. This would happen after cruising the local drive in eateries lookin' for a race (victim). Jesse's car was very fast. We'll get into that in a little bit. Anyway, he would just get out of the car and reach under and "bump" that big lever on the end which would open the exhaust system.

I’m going to get ahead of myself here but, I need some help/counseling. I’ve discovered that in Haltom City (the next town over) there are all kinds of specialty shops. I sure could have used this info on Jr’s car. Anyway, I’ve discovered a little chrome shop with friendly price’s. Two Mexican brother’s (Bernie and Jesse) that are into this stuff and are excited about doing the chrome work for me. They do great work and understand what I’m trying to do. Here’s my problem- I have a bunch of Appleton 552 parts left over from the Jr build that need to be plated. I need to know how to remove this mechanism from this arm to get it chromed. HELP!

The 2" gate valves are for syrup/molasses applications. The huge 3" are for petroleum products.

 

J&B Polished are good people and do real nice work. They aren't far from my shop and is the only place I have been using.

 

After studying Davids (banditomerc) build I now understand why you do this. I call it a bondo bridge. It reduces the amount of filler used by 80%. After everything is cleaned up with the grinder, the weld thru primer is applied. Makes things go fast.

Here is another problem part of the Appleton thing. I don't know if the gears are pressed in or, have snap rings. I don't think they would survive the plating process. Chad S used to be the guru on these but he hasn't been on the HAMB for months.

I like your term "bondo bridge." I've also heard that referred to as "plating" or "gapping" so I don't think there is any set term. I just call it "filling in the gap with metal" but I'm not always as succinct as I should be.

 

We're entering into a time where weeks of work are going to be condensed into day's. You guy's are catching up.

 

I'm not real sure how I've missed 53 pages of an awesome build thread. the new hamb layout has brought your thread to my attention.... dude! your doing a fantastic job. love the build.

The next task is to make that rear gravel deflector look right. If you look closely at the rear bumper tip and rear gravel deflector you'll see that there needs to be a large extension to the bottom of the fender.
