I am only 68 so the Mcgee era was before my time. I loved the car when Skitchfield owned it.

IMO, my Auto Shop teacher (Mr. Walsh) 32 Bonneville runner. There's a picture of it somewhere when the parachute is pulled and car is facing it. I believe that picture made the cover of Hot Rod Magazine one month, hopefully someone can post. Here's a couple pictures of it back in the day at the National Roadster show. Really hope someone can fill me in on where Mr. Walsh is now and who has the 32. Iconic

Couldn't find a pic, but Lobeck's first 32 hiboy is the standard by which everyone measures.

  12. "BEST" is very subjective ... but I'll have to agree that the Doane Spencer Deuce Hiboy is probably my favorite ... that said, I wouldn't mind having the Bob McGee, Joe Nitti, or Walker Morrison roadster parked in my garage!

This is the first time that I've heard Tom referred to as " Mr. Walsh" !
He's building hotrods and racing Bonneville .

Visually, I'd have to say Spencers. I remember not knowing what windshield that was, but I remember it only looked right on his car. But everything else looks so purposely done. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been cloned to death.

The Doane Spencer roadster has cowl steering and a Duvall windshield. Nuf Said.

Your shop teacher (Mr. John Walsh) is doing well! ... I just saw him this last weekend (at the Goodguy's West Coast Nats in Pleasanton) ... He was driving his bitchin' Deuce 3wd Coupe.

The #333 Bonneville Roadster is still in the Walsh family ... In fact, John & his brother Tom are entering it in the USFRA World of Speed and/or the SCTA World Finals events later this year ... John's nephew Justin (Tommy's oldest son) will again be handling the driving duties ... trying to bump the #333 roadster's current record(s)!

Checkout my Bonneville album for more info & pics of the #333 Deuce Roadster.

Thank you for the heads up, he always said "Don't sell that Goat" so I haven't. Not only was he my auto shop teacher (87') but he was also my Uncles (68'). Great man and miss him, Sequoia High School's auto shop has since been leveled. Hope someone finds the picture of it in Bonneville with the parachute open and car facing it. I'm not sure of speed but know it was floored and got sideways while going for a record. Never seen a photo like it and car was hauling the mail when it was took.

Just an FYI ... Tom Walsh's older brother John is a retired high school auto shop teacher.

... but to get this thread back on topic, here's John Walsh's 1956 & 1957 record setting flattie-powered Deuce Hi-Boy:

As featured in the November 1957 issue of Custom Rodder

NOTE: This '32 roadster (body) remains in the family! ... It's now brother Tommy's bitchin' Deuce Hi-Boy:

    I vote for Scritch's '32 hi boy!!
Personally had the pleasure of cruising many thousands of happy miles with him & wife Marian in the 1970's when the car was black.
Fresh outa' B-ville with engine tagged seals, we headed for Tulsa Nats in 1976, he was still running 2.65 gears & loafing at 70 mph while I was turning 3500 at 70mph with 3.78 gears.
Don't know about how many of these others that have line chased as much as Scritch has done with his hi boy, making it a true street rod in my book.
Dick still has his '32 Phaeton in Kona, Hawaii & we email daily & remember all the good cross country stories from years past.------Don

    Invalid question.
Looking for the "best" one is like looking for the "best" camshaft or the "best" transmission. (Unobtanium)
You can have a "best all around" but no one item can be best at everything.

All that have been chosen so far are fine examples but, this is the one that does it for me.

I'd have to throw in a vote for the Gary Kessler/Don Ward yellow highboy. It sure got my motor running in the early 70s. After seeing it I went home and built my version of it.
