Purchased a Mr Goodwrench 350 LM1 engine at an estate sale. Owner had passed away. He owned a construction business and had a fleet of trucks. This engine came out of one of his trucks. Anybody know what this carburetor attachment for? At first I thought it was a vacuum canister for the dizzy. Now I think it is a speed control device. Also, this engine has an unusual front engine mount...maybe it was put on for storage or ?.

Looks like a governor to me. Was it in a large truck?

I think that is an adapter to run natural gas. Don't know for sure, though.

Should be a good heavy duty engine.

The son told me it was a replacement motor for his Dad's daily driver truck in the middle of the 1980's. He said it was a low hour engine so maybe it also had a HOB meter on it. The transmission failed and the motor was removed and was stored in his Dad's barn on this cart for at least six years. He gave me the cart the engine was mounted to. The son took over the estate and didn't know much about the engine. He had several people there buying stuff off their farm.

Another vote for governor. Take that side cover off, I'm betting you'll find a link coming from the diaphram hooked to the throttle linkage.

Chevrolet Rochester 2 bbl. with a governor off a big truck.

What does the distributor look like? Extra vacuum line, no vacuum advance?

ONETRICKPONY, Thank you for the eBay pix. You nailed it! Off it goes and on goes a 4 bbl intake and carb. Still curious about the quirky looking engine mount. Doesn't seem to be a Hurst cradle mount.

Big truck front mount. The engine was in a 1 1/2 ton or larger truck.

Yep it's part of the governor that came on the original truck. Was supposed to keep bonehead drivers from winding the engine out with a bonehead driver behind the wheel going through the gears.

From seeing onetrickpony's post in post 16 it may be worth the effort to take the whole governor setup including carb and distributor off and stick them on Ebay. You won't run the setup anyhow so you may as well get some of the investment back.

I'd at least pull the pan and check the bearings in that engine before sticking it in anything though.

Kinda strange that it has the truck front mount and a flexplate for an automatic transmission.

If that thing was in a 1 1/2 ton truck for very long, it must have a steel crank in it.
I saw a guy put a cast crank engine in a 1 1/2 ton before and snapped the crank moving it out of the shop!

Good find! Lots of heavy duty internals and 4 bolt mains but heads may be small valve, open chamber.

All of the Goodwrench engines I've seen are generic "crate engines".

Let this be a lesson to all us hot rodders.

Before you store an engine, mount something to it that makes no sense. SO if you die, the rest of us will have something to figure out

Maybe somebody tried installing an automatic transmission in a large truck so it only had the front motor mount and the tail shaft mount on the transmission. I've seen guys try it in a tri-5 without adding anything to stop the motor from twisting in the frame and the tail shaft housing breaks on the transmission.

engine govenor worked on many carbs that have had one ( them carbs are not worth much , as they are small cfm and the govenor assy ) , as for the single front mount and auto trans , have worked on a few conversions that used a midplate that used the biscuit style motor mounts that mounted on the side to hold up the block and trans with no tailshaft supports . ( kind of like the set up in a straight eight poncho ) trans dapt used to make it . we used them on older trucks that had a small ( 4/v6 53 or 4-71 series ) detroits in them
