Most transverse fours sit on the right of the transaxle. The whole assembly might be 40" or more wide, with the tall engine comprising the first 25" or so on the right. In a 2CV that would put the cam drive sprocket about where the right headlight is. And then you'd have to find space for the radiator.

Apart from the engine/transaxle not physically fitting in the envelope, it might actually work with the 2CV's suspension. It would be a pity to lose the clever interconnected suspension in favour of some cookie-cutter strut or wishbone IFS; it'd be reducing all the 2CV's cool conceptual originality to surface and appearance, i.e. a snail-shaped cliché.

  7. Wow! Looks amazing.

  8. Mika, that looks fantastic!

And Ned, thanks for the explanation, and I agree that losing the stock suspension would be a shame- at the same, finding something that could be laid back 45 degrees (like a Zetec) would make for a sharp-looking conversion.

great thread, excellent workmanship, origional.to whoever asked the question about restrictive laws on modifying cars.the way i see it there is a great conspiracy in europe to get older vehicles off the road, not enough older vehicles will mean people having to buy new probably electric cars.all the working classes will have to drive small cars while the ruling elite will still have access to powerful transport.a bit like china.in the last 20 years hundreds of small scrapyards have closed.if you cant get parts you cant keep the older stuff on the road.guys like me who keep older stuff going for as long as possible dont generate money for the governments or big business.fair play to the brits they are the only ones to give the finger to europe and fight theface less beurocrats that are fucking europe up. rant over for now.I AM NOT A NUMBER I AM A FREE MAN

Before things got standardized to engine on right, transaxle on left (or the other way around in the case of some Hondas) there were a few other variants on the transverse principle. The original Mini's gearbox-in-sump arrangement springs to mind, but there were also the first FWD Peugeots (to keep it all French - I think the 305 was the last with that layout) which I seem to recall having the gearbox behind the engine, driven from the clutch by a gear train or chain, making for a narrow and pretty much symmetrical package. Unfortunately none of these engines are much to look at.

The obvious engine swap is the 1220cc GS or the 1299cc GSA. Two Horse Garage in England built a lot of 2CVs with that engine. They rev very high and very freely and come with massive inboard disks so stopping is good too. And they fit. You should be able to find a junk GSA somewhere.

Mazda rotary? A sort of do-it-yourself M35 saloon?

DKW 2-stroke triple? (I thought of that because, if we're going water-cooled, over the gearbox might be the obvious place for a radiator, as it is on the Deek.)

Very Cool. Would have been neat to see the Citroen chevron pattern at the bottom of the louvers.

Technically, a 2Cv is far away from a turd :p
And seeing a project car from 1936 , up to 198x ( I d have to check my sources ), 50 y/o for the same car can t really result in a turd .
BTW, Myth Buster tried to polish a turd. It seems it s not so easy :p
Not that I m in love with 2 Cv, but it s a historical car on his place.
    Friendly :p
