Well guys I'm a new guy here and am starting a frame build this weekend. I am doing a model a style frame out of square tube and need suggestions on wheelbase. This rod will be running a 350 sbc with a 700r4 trans and 10 bolt. I will be running 20" steels with 33" tall cokers. I want it long and low but how long is too long? If you guys could post pictures of your rods with wheelbase info that would be awesome! I was thinking 115" TCP 120". Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you want to be trad. devotee: 103-15/32..."roughly," right, Bruce?
When in doubt, consult our oracle Mr. Lancaster. :D

Stock wheelbase for A's was 103.5 or thereabouts. A bunch have been built on a B chassis, at 106 or 106.5. They look good, and give a little more engine room. Mine's on a frame I built, based on a 106" wheelbase, but with the spring behind the axle makes the actual wheelbase more like 109". I'd expect a Model A on 115" to look a little cartoon-ey. But your car, your choice;)

Thats funny you said that... Cartoonish is not an insult in my book but rather a good idea. Take my latest bike build for example. See below a cartoony tough as nails cross. After further examination and research 118" looks to be about right.

A bit of a can of worms question on a traditional board that admires original proportions. I'm assuming some type of an A body? The traditional answer would be either 103 1/2" on an A frame and 106" on a '32 frame. But it's a hot rod. I personally like a bit more hood area, and have seen more than a few done nicely on 110"-112" WB. More than 112" and it does start to look odd, but it's your car. Somehow low & 33" tires seems out of place, but I'm sure you've got it worked out. If we all had the same tastes in cars, beer, and women it'd be a boring place.

No I'm not sure at all. I'm a bike builder that decided to build a rod.

Well put buddy...not to mention the whole idea of hot rods is to be creative and break tradition. Hot rods would have never come to be without those that broke the mold.

I like your bike. I didn't mean to insult you, so I'm glad you didn't take it as such. That said, there's, "traditional" there's, "proportional" and then there's "aesthetically pleasing to the builder". They don't always have to overlap.

Wrong as in I'm wrong for thinking it looks perfect?

No problem. I like them very much. However I also love deuce 3,5 and sedans of traditional proportions as well.

That's too funny. Gave me a good laugh. That base does look nice as well.

I believe mine at 107 1/2 at the moment. I still did a 4in recess on the firewall and ended up with 2 1/2 space in between my lt1 and elect fan....so it's about right. Good luck.

Agreed. It looks like a rusted Ducati.

The shorter the better. 106" here. It's as short as I could get with a caddy motor and not cut the firewall. Super long wheelbases with big gaps sorta suggest poor planning.

Great looking 5 window. Still like the long look, but that is sweet.
