I finally got to see the race course during Speed Week. The tragedy is that I was stuck riding in an aluminum tube with 120 other boobs 30,000 feet above the salt flats. I was flying to the west coast for work and flew right over the raceway. I could clearly see the course and all the vehicles lined up on the salt. The photos I took with my cell phone don't do justice to the view. <O</O<O</O I'm envious of all those on the ground keeping the racing spirit alive. I am with you in spirit, and briefly, at 5:31 pm Mountain time, I was just overhead...then I was gone. <O></O>
It's clearly a 56, you can tell by the dash...... Cool shot. Is the track the whiter stripe to the top of where all the cars are pitted? How many miles long is it?
You know the pilot knew exactly where they were and more than likely said to each other, "Hey, you wanna show them some real speed"?
Like the title of your thread says, you can always tell people you made a pass over the salt flats @ 500 mph and you wouldn't be telling a lie.
Hey! did ya see us wave? Yeah, where the turquoise '41 ford pu with the black primer front end was right around the 4 mile mark. You had to see us, just East of the pits or black "stain" along the long coarse
I'm getting ready to make another pass on my way back to Denver. I'll see if the pilot will buzz the salt heading east.
