I have a dual weber carter setup from Langdon's and one of the carbs leaks like crazy at the base where it attaches to the adapter flange. The carb seems to seep fuel overnight almost emptying the bowl. The garage smells like someone is just pouring fuel all over the place. I can't see any carb housing cracks nor see an issue with the middle gasket allowing it to run down the barrels and collect on the throttle plates. My intake is always drenched with wet fuel even after sitting for a day or so.

I thought it could be getting some sort of pressure from the fuel line as the truck sits so i even disconnected the lines at the carbs and it still seeps over a day or so.

The motor oil had to be change also due to fuel contamination and the new oil already smells after 3 days of sitting.

Anyone who is running this setup seen or know what this issue could be?

Interesting... bump for answers. I have the same setup without any problems so far, but I haven't driven it much.

Off topic for this post but you running mechanical pump or electric?

You make any tweaks to your mixture screws?

Any idea where to find a gasket kit for this carb? i cant seem to find anything even when using the stamped numbers on the carb.

Your Needle and seat in one of your carbs is not working. The fuel should never leak out like that.
I have the same carbs on my inline and so far so good. Pull the leaky carb and I bet your needle is not seating correctly. Check your float arm too.
Also there should be a gasket from the adapter on the intake side and the carb side.

  5. It sounds like a stuck needle/seat or float issue. The float should push needle in a closed position to stop fuel flow. If the float or needle are stuck or blocked the fuel will not be stopped from flowing.
The carbs that tom sells are new, you should call him about this. I expect he will replace the carb or at the very least tell you how to fix the problem.
I have these carbs on the hopped-up 230 Dodge flat 6 in my '46 Ply and they work perfectly.

Mine ran perfectly out of the box, no tweaking needed. And I'm running a mechanical fuel pump.

The other carb that does not currently leak was botched to begin with. After installing both for the first time and just running the truck for a bit to look for leaks the (now non gasket leaking carb) was just letting fuel pour into the barrels after the truck was shut off. This went unnoticed for about 3 times one afternoon after the truck was initially run and the air cleaners installed after. The gas smell is what triggered me to take a closer look. All that fuel went down my intake all those times and contaminated the motor oil like you would not believe.

See the video below i took of the first issue I had with one of the new carbs.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mFVS8LOZaw&feature=youtu.be

The residue pressure in the lines and carb would caused this to happen.

Right away I knew what is was. I took it off and split it and found a huge and I mean HUGE chunk of what looked like machining metal stuck in the float needle area. The chunk was so large it could not pass thru any of the holes or the main drilled supply hole in the float seat fitting. It was in the carb to begin with and I can ensure you it never came from my thoroughly pre-flushed system. Also in that same carb i found smaller metal debris located at the bottom of the opposite fuel bowl side.

After I cleaned out that first carb I have yet to have a issue with it. Now the other one just keeps seeping. I dont think it is the needle or seal because why would it seep when the location of the needle is at the top of the carb and I am unhooking the supply line thus not introducing any additional fuel or pressure after the system is off

I will even post a pic of the metal chunk I took out of the carb later.

Gaskets are installed to both the top and bottom of the adapter plate. The gasket that is soaking wet and seeping is the one from the carb to adapter plate. I am not sure where the fuel is coming from. I see no evidence of it leaking from the middle carb gasket where the float bowl level is, and nothing is running down the barrel to the throttle plates. After sitting for a bit all is dry on the top side of the plates and insides of the barrels.

I wonder if something is leaking from the bottom ports that face downward under the carb. There is one that is right off of the barrel that is notched to allow flow.

Caution! I had a friend who had a leaky lawn mower gas tank....leaked perhaps 6-8 oz of fuel and the water heater kicked on and set it off.....blew the garage door across the alley and hit the neighbor's house. Blew the brick garage wall sideways 6 inches. Broke the garage slab. Gasoline vapor WILL ignite. A pressure rise of perhaps 1/2 psi is all it takes to destroy the garage...even without a fire. IF the carb is leaking, do not park in an enclosed garage. Be safe

And to whomever is reading this tread do not take it as a bash towards Tom. I never said anything bad about him or anything being junk or bad product. I am just trying to fix an issue so i can continue my build.

I used his name in the topic title to hopefully get other people who have the same setup in their rides attention.

Sounds like some plug in the bottom of a jet well or some drilled passage that is plug from the bottom of the float bowl.

Took the top half off yesterday to only find the bowl was about 1/4rd full and the intake passage was wet again. Cleaned it out and found this wonderful garbage in the bowl.

It is the exact same material i found in the first carb I took apart that was spewing fuel as show in the video i posted before.

I think i did however find out what the material is from. On the top of the carbs you will see 2 punch holes located inside the lip around the choke blades facing upwards. The holes from the inside look like a bullet passed thru due to the punched hole. The material i found looks slightly curled and torn like its from these punched areas.

It is possible the holes are punch prior to the finial assembly using the gaskets thus allowing the debris to fall into the bowl.

The needle and seat were clean and closing fine. So I put it back together and this time rested the carb level over a little catch basin to catch any leaking gas. I powered up the pump and pressured the system and let it run for a min. I left it over night and will check it when i get home to see if it still seeps from the bottom area.

I dont know how it can be the needle or seat when the fuel level is below them and keeps draining low in the bowl.

I read somewhere that Tom said that he had no more of the weber Carters to sale and could not get anymore new ones. Has anyone else heard this or am I mistaken about availability? I was under the impression that one would have to find a re-builder that had some in stock in order to buy some or find some at a swap meet. Not much chance of finding any in the junk yard as they crushed most of the 70s cars that came with these carburetors years ago. I am running YH Carters on both my 235 Chevy pick up and on my 218 Plymouth and have thought about going to the weber carter carburetors for better gas mileage, any improvement over the 10-12 mpg I get now would be nice.

Just got off the phone with him and he wants to review the location of the punched holes in the carb top. I will keep you informed on what he thinks the issue might be. Im sure some way or another it will be sorted out.

Just spoke with roadkill pu at the HAMB Drags and he is running Langdons setup in his 54 with a 235. He is running it with a fenton intake and header also. Told me he was getting 16-18 MPG. The mileage might be great but man these carbs sure are an ugly set-up IMHO.

Tom has never run me off the phone either. Given me plenty of his time and honest advice. I have never even bought anything from the man. Says alot in my book.

Here's a top view of my set up with triple Holley/Webers on a 292. No leakage problems unless I stomp on it. Then it all goes down real quick!

Have you checked the floats? Plastic floats aren't always compatible with Current fuel blends. A friend has been running the same Langdon setup for a few years when it developed a seeping condition. The floats were saturated. New floats corrected the problem.

Floats seem to be fine and not saturated. What I did was adjust the float level a fraction to cut off the fuel sooner. Seems that the high fuel level in the carb during non running times was right up to the overflow level and the capillary action of fuel just kept creeping until it was lower. Seems a bit better but not fully solved now but I will watch it.
