Once all the welding and rack bracket was in I gave it all a coat or rust preventative primer, somehow it makes it all look 100% better when its all bright grey lol....

So that was all i could get done for a while so she was rolled back outside and covered up untill i had a chance to have a go at the inner and outer rocker panels or sills as we call them over here!

Ok the next big job i had planned was to replace the inner and outer rockers, i knew this would be a soul destroyingly dirty job but one that had to be done lol, I took a week off work and plowed on with it all....

    <a href="http://s129.photobucket.com/user/nitrousnutter/media/1951%20Chevy%20Styleline/null_zps81c80ab5.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

I didnt take too long in hacking the old one out it was a lot worse than i thought, most of it was swept up afterwards lol. I got the inner and out rockers fitting as best as i could but realised that my doors have a lot of pudding in so found it hard to get them in a position i liked, i decide to worry about the gaps when i come to repair the doors later on.

    <a href="http://s129.photobucket.com/user/nitrousnutter/media/1951%20Chevy%20Styleline/null_zps62736005.jpg.html" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

The next job was the mammoth job of welding it all together....

Anyway thats all the photos i have up till now although im sure i had some of it finished, but its now all solid in the rocker areas and my next mission is to repair the scuttle panel and take the front screens out and repair the tops of a pillars and screen surrounds, plus if i have time do the rear panel and any other bits ive missed.

Good to see those inner sills were spot on. Not so great to see how bad it actually was but great to see it found the right hands to take on the mammoth task of getting the old girl rock solid again.

As for my projects one step forward 10 back at mo. bikes back in bits.

Well ive had a week off work this week and made a nice bit of progress, my mission was to attack the rust around the windshield and if I had time look at the rear panel and maybe mock the engine in the hole, well heres how I got on......
Firstly I borrowed a set of wheels to move my car into my mates workshop, and was surprised how good they looked, give me some feedback as I may be able to buy them, and yes I know I have the front ones on back because the rears are 9" and slightly rub the inner fenders on rear....

    slightly artyfarty shots...

First job I removed the broken windshields and straightened the centre bar, then I had to push up the wiper spindle holes where the bonnet hinge was loose and before I owned it it went to a car haulers yard and the workers opened the hood to look what engine was underneath not knowing you had to pull the hood towards you when closing it, so the weight of the hood hammered the wipers into the scuttle panel....doh.....

    still got that done ok...

next I run a wire wheel around the inside of screen aperture to get the rust out of way...

Next job I cut out the rust around screen corners....

Then it was the long job of making plates up to repair the holes, these are only temporarily tacked into place but I think they will do the job...

I spent Monday and Tuesday this week doing the screen, next job was the rear panel below decklid...

I attacked it with a hammer and chisel and as I guessed a lot of filler and not a lot of metal has fallen out lol....

I run a grinder over the lower rear quarters to see how bad they were too...

then I drew a line line across above the rot and below the new trunk floor I made and welded in and then cut it out its somehow very satisfying cutting out rotten metal knowing it will never infect the car again lol...

Next I fabricated a rear panel repair section, it wasn't too hard to do just working out the length and followed the lovely shape of that rear!!....

next I cut out the rot in the lower rear quarters and plated these....

This is how it stands tonight, tomorrow my good friend Jon is going to be welding all the plates properly and ill give it all a good coat of anti rust paint to keep the rot at bay lol.....

  13. Nice car and nice work - wow, that's a lot of rot.

I wanted to buy a 49 Chevy 4 dr. last year that was hidden in a dark barn. From what could be seen rustwise it was similar as yours - I passed on that car cause I knew I could not deal with that amount of rust.

Forget about those wheels - those are so ugly and wrong that you might risk to have your thread closed. Stay with those steelies and get some nice WW.

Yes I know it's wrong to like the wheels and I hated them on my mates 55 dodge rated, so he borrowed my steelies and I only have the alloys to move mine around on, but I can't help but think they look kinda cool :\, but wheels are a long long way off yet, got engine and box to fit body to prep for paint, and interior plus rewire. So plenty to do lol. Thanks for the comments and yes mine was in a dark workshop but I knew the rot was there and this was my only chance at a rod so went for it. :)

Looking good mate, keep up the work.
God I had forgotten how bad the rots gets back home and how hard it is to work on old cars there.
    What's the plans? Kustom style?

I agree, those wheels look crap. Alright for rolling it about on, but get something cooler once ya driving it daily. Neat project man, I haven't bought a project yet that was any better than this was. We build what fits our budget.

Thanks for the pic, yes very helpful, I've the motor mounts and transmission crossmember made now so I'm pull the motor back out tomorrow and having a go at tidying the firewall up. Once this is done I have to slightly alter pinion angle on the axle, then it will be painting the frame and getting brake lines run.....

Next job I refitted the engine and transmission and then realised I had to alter the pinion slightly, I did this with metal wedges and got it so I was happy, I then measured up for the propshaft and had a local firm make this for me (well done JW Engineering), while I had the axle hanging I rebushed the rear springs and painted them...
then I refitted it all ready to put it away for a few weeks while I decided what to do for a brake pedal....

While the engine and box were out I decided to tidy up the firewall by getting rid of the many holes that were there...
I also trimmed back the bits on the firewall that were a bit close to the motor now I have fitted the v8..
I tidied these with some 6mm steel bar...

This weekend I have been building a pedal box, I decided to make one from scratch as if I ordered one from the US I would have to wait upto 6 weeks for it to arrive and then have to cut it around to fit what I need, so after a day I managed to get the main part built that goes from the firewall to the top of the column, I just have to work out how long to make my pedal then I can get it made next time I get a chance to do some in a couple of weeks, so far I have made a new plate for the firewall as im going for a firewall mounted master with booster...

Just a couple of my pedal as I was building, it's not done yet as need to finish the assembly but it's coming together well....

P.s the M10 bolt across top is temporary to hold everything together while I worked out pedal ratio, I'll be making it of stronger stuff when I come to put it together for real.....

WOW, that is a tough project; I honestly thought the car looked a little too far gone with all the rust damage to the rockers and floor. The car looks to be undercoated, and I think sometimes the undercoat actually keeps water from draining out, leading to the rust through. That French car steering wheel is almost the most unusual I've seen, short of some of Ed Roth's designs. And then you started on the rack and pinion conversion. I kept thinking, the rack's too far back, the engine oil pan is't going to clear. But it does. I think you could probably make the cross member for the rack, have the racks rebuilt, and market them. I still think maybe it should be forward a little bit; the steering shafts would't have such steep angles, but maybe that's the best it can be done. I'm waiting to see what you do for the exhaust. I'll be following this thread. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Hi, thanks for the reply, exactly what I need to keep me motivated!!. The rack has to go where it is to line up with the steering arms in the hubs, it was all a bit "it has to go there, make the next bit fit" still it has all worked out well, yes the steering joint is a bit tight but I relieved it a little and it's just fine like that, has no tight spots etc. The crossmember for the steering was just a bit of angle that I cut and made prettier so it didn't look just like a bit of angle stuck across the frame. As for the for the exhausts I have rams horns on their way over and I'll just make the collector fit around the steering rack. The headache at the moment is making the brake pedal assembly, I'm getting there tho but don't get to work on it as much as I'd like. Thanks for the encouragement tho and do check in now and then! Thanks Jason.
