Poll ? . What motor in your Model A?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 53fordcustom, Aug 4, 2013.

  1. In mine ? I used a Traditional, dependable, powerful, easy and inexpensive to fix SBC. If those are truly the main things you're after, for me, that's the engine that fills the bill.

Living in Ohio , you can't do the whole daily driver thing with old cars.. Weather is pretty unpredictable. Most of my trips will be around town with the occasional few hours drive.

While not HAMB friendly..it has it's own story.
Back in 2007 a buddy called me to invite me to do the Hot Rod Tour with him...I believe it's sponsered by Year One. Well I had to decline because of work so the call wrapped up with him considering his options. A few minutes passed and it came to me...My 16 yr old son would love to do something like this...and he was out of school for the summer I believe. As I trusted my friend to look over my boy, I called my buddy back. The plan was a go and I was very excited for my son. They made the 6 or 7 day "adventure" in a hopped up 69 Camero with a warmed over LT1/4L60E. They started in Florida and went all the way up to Michigan with the tour..made some friends along the way...some fun hard miles were logged on that trip. Making it back...my son, with a sunburnt right forearm (windows down...no AC for days on end) was grinning from both ears when he got back. I do believe my buddy cut him loose with another 16yr old touring buddy to run "solo" on Burbon Street. I do believe they had some fun that night and I'm glad my friend let him run. That trip would end up being the first and last my son was able to make. We lost him in Dec of 2008. So when my friend with the camero decided to upgrade his cars powerplant...I bought that motor...feeling sort of tied to it. Crazy what you'll grab ahold of. So, that's my motor..an LT1
Maybe if I'm lucky I'll find a deal on one of those efi stacks to dress it up old school. I've dedicated my current build to my son...and i can't wait to fire that LT1 up for the first time and take him for another ride again.

Started with a flatty but that's a lot of money to go slow now there's a 401 nailhead setting between the rails of my 29 A coupe.

Traditional V8s - early Olds, early Cad (or early-looking Cad), Y-block would be my votes. I'm a hood kinda guy, though, at least the top.

Bristol 2-liter inline-six (the one that originated as a prewar BMW motor) would be my 'WTF factor' more-or-less-period engine, if you can find one and not spend zillions building it.

When (that's really spelled 'if') I get around to building the 2-inch-chop-2-or-3-inch-channel cycle-fender Tudor I've kinda-sorta got in mind (for my daughter to drive to high school occasionally, but that's another story), I already have the engine I'd run in it - a Saab B234T 2.3 turbo. Much nicer motor than the Ford SOHC 2.3 though it doesn't have an oval on it anywhere.

    Don't worry, it'll run a full hood.

I have 429 caddy mill with 6x2's in my 31 tudor. But the cats ass would be a 331 caddy motor with a 1937 cadillac/lasalle trans

How about a plain old small block ford 289 is perfectly traditional?
