2013 NSRA Nationals Attendance

Here is my perspective on the show. I am a young guy (30 yrs old) I thought the show was great this year. Weather was great and attendance seemed better than years past. I have been going since I was a little kid. I do not like the 30 yr rule at all. I am not opposed to them opening the show up past pre 48, but they need to cut it off at some point. Every year allows another year of cars. Pretty soon you will see a load of s-10 trucks and import cars. They need to pick a year and cut it off. If they don't it will get worse year after year. I am from the Cincinnati, OH area and there are a ton of younger people interested in old cars. Most of them are pre 65. I hope to be going to the Nats for years to come, but I am afraid it will be a totally different show in 5-10 years. I hope I am wrong.

Remember, when they give the car count, it is "registered participants", not cars. I don't think the Nats have ever had 10,000 cars on that grounds. When I didn't have a pre-'48, I registered for years because it was cheaper than paying to get in as a spectator for four days. I walked past a '40 conv that had four window stickers on it, he either had a large family or really wanted that deuce roadster!

But, overall it did seem fuller than years past. I never have seen so many late model ElCaminos and Malibu wagons in one place.

I have always been a bit skeptical of NSRA's attendance numbers. They are the ones that come up with the numbers and there is no way to verify those numbers that I am aware of.

It's not just the NSRA, I second guess the numbers of all the big events.

Best weather I can remember, and given the open parking spots, I'd say 10, 000 is about right. Been going since 1982[St Paul]. Scooters were sold out with six pages of folks on wait list, come on. Nike should have a booth selling walking shoes.Went to Back to the Fifties in 2005. Took forever to get in, and even longer to find a parking spot. Seems to me its outgrown the fairground, way to congested. It was the best back in 1982.

No way there was 10000 cars, I counted, and I only got up to 2 thousand something. I saw a 1983 car there, boy that makes me mad, what does that guy think coming to a rod show anyway? I wasted 15 good minutes looking that car over when I could have been looking at a rare fiberglass, killer 1932 roadster, built by a rod shop last month. I don’t like the 30 year rule, and what’s with the mobility scooters anyway? If these people can’t walk 5 or 10 miles a day they should be in a nursing home and leave these shows to us real hot rodders. Yea, that’s what I think. In fact if it was up to me I’d turn off the air conditioning in the vendor area. Let’s make this thing like the old days by God. And what about that swap meet? What a joke, who can afford this junk anyway. And, on top of that there wasn’t enough stuff there. All I saw was some old beat up 32 ford coupes, a 36 Ford three window or was that 2? And a bunch of other undesireable 32 to 40 ford junk. I mean really, who buys this crap? Must be some stupid people there cause I saw some sold signs on some of that rusty crap. On top of everything else I saw a whole bunch of people having a good time and saying what a good event it was. Man did that piss me off. They acted like seeing a 1969 COPO Camaro with an aluminum block 427 was a big deal. Ha….what a joke man. Forty-eight baby, that’s where it’s at for us real car guys. This year does it for me, I’m gonna cancel my membership in protest. Next year I’m just gonna drive by several times and look over and smile at all the fools that just think they are having fun. I was down for the first time in 11 years. Haven't been an NSRA Member since then, but had to go as some Australians I have gotten to know from Ozrodders were going to be there, so I drove down for Saturday.

The mix of cars was pretty good, although the 80s Caprice Wagon looked way out of place.

All the tents set up in the parking areas had me kind of taken aback, I guess you can rent tents but you cant leave your own up.

Traffic was good as mentioned, for the vendors, but I still wonder how much internet sales take away from their possible business? I mean, afterall, its about costs and shipping at times.

Was a nice trip down, got to see some nice cars and talk to a few people. Did not miss being an NSRA Member.

It's been several years since my last (Louisville) Nationals, and the first with my '32. I had a really good time with my friends because of great weather, many beautiful cars and trucks, the huge air conditioned buildings, and the hundreds of venders! I'll be going back next year.

However, the scooter thing was ridiculous! You had to be careful not to get hit or run over by some who drove like idiots, especially inside the Xpo. First time I ever saw a "scooter jam" at a few intersections! But it really was evident during the Saturday concert and '32 give-a way in Freedom Hall, where several rows of scooters lined up! I kept waiting for one of those in scooters who were taking pictures of the roadster to run into it or one the cameras on the floor.

I know many people really need the advantage of mobile transport, but there were far too many who were just plain lazy, zooming around while munching Ding Dongs, large ice cream cones and the like! Kind of reminds me of the last time I went to the Auburn IN auction, where golf carts ruled! Hopefully some common sense will prevail in the future to prevent a few from spoiling a super event!

Best post of this thread! Only on the HAMB can people claim a show with over 10,00 hot rods, parts, and people wasn't good enough for them.

This was my first year since the cut off date was extended. Enjoyed it all. 2008 was my previous attendance as a spectator.
It was nice to get out and see such a wide variety of high quality cars. Kind of a rejuvenation if you will, you just don't get that going to the same somewhat local shows in our area. Probably why I've come to almost enjoy working on them more than driving them. Cost is about the same these days with gas up where it is, lol.
