Didn't say sbc isn't traditional... Just that I won't be running one in my ride. Anybody put something in then regret it?... Mounting difficulties, space issues, etc..?

oRIginal 4-Bangers are becoming the latest craze. A flatehead V8 isn't much faster, its heavier. I bought my coupe with V8 intentions but now, I cant do it. And I got the cool Rocket with the 6-carbs, the 327 with 4 carbs in the garage. It feels good showing off the OG motor & you dont get any stupid comment from purest or any car nut. Except those mullet fuckers, "Id put a V8 in it". I drive it everyday & it goes 65-70 on the freeway, everywhere. Just watch the fluids.

I just have to ask, you planning on driving this thing on long distance runs? If so you need to think of what engines have parts that are easy to get. While having a cool rare mill is awesome, being stuck in the middle of no where for 4 days while you wait for a hard to get part can dampen the trip and be very costly.

So look for engines with long runs of production. This way you have a fair chance at being able to find parts. Just a suggestion.

Good advice, Rebelrun. Serviceability on the road is good to consider.
Last car was a '29 A CCPU, ran an aluminum Olds 215 and a T5. Not a race winner, but plenty of zip to get on down the road, and very light. Used a 390 Holley - just right.
Currrent ride is a hammered '30 coupe, went to a 455 Olds (OT, but wanted torque) and a Muncie. Biggest challenge was steering and starter. Starter is on driver side, and I insisted on traditional (vs cross) steering. That made for some very tight fit engineering to mount the steering box (reversed Corvair). But it works, and I sure have the torque I was looking for. No need to buzz it - prolly never see 5K rpms.

Putting a '55 322 nailhead in with three deuce setup...

Think the steering gear will be a PITA but will find a way to get it turning.

Oh, and the engine is about 10 feet long so the firewall may have to undergo major surgery.

    We've got a few A's.....
    2 '29's both with 302/C4
a '31 thats been on the road for 34yrs with 351w/ FMX
and a '30 2dr thats half built with a V12 Lincoln in it.
the other 2, '31 AA & "30Tudor are both stock.

  11. Presently an A=banger resides between the rails of my Tudor. I'm gonna make it work, at least for a while. I've had a line on a '55 265 for a while that is a part of my backup plan. Then there's the recent 59AB flatty that I've found (speed parts and all) that seemed to find me.

    Options are nice!

Well, by "budget" do you mean initial setup, future hop-up, or overall? Some of these engines can be had cheap but can cost a fortune to hop up and some can just plain cost a fortune. For example, I can usually find a banger for sale near where I am that supposedly turns, every few weeks on CL in the northeast for short money, however, fresh parts and speed parts can go for moon money. Take a look around your area and see what people are selling, then see what it could cost to warm it up.

  23. Original 4 banger in my 28 RPU. Its not hot, but it runs and its so neat I don't plan to change it.

My model A remains in the planning stages, but I do have a '59 Caddy 390 already built and waiting along side the 31 coupe body across the shop from the 32 chassis. For my money the best choices are the early OHV caddies, early hemi's or maybe the early old's or nailheads. With those you don't sacrifice the giddy-up for the look-good.

  30. You asked "What motor in your Model A", well, I've had three - one was a SBC, one was a SBF, and the newest is a Ford SOHC 2.3 4 banger.
