i found a 348 out of a bus i was told the block are driffernt then a car by the top of the bore they are cut out are the piston the same as the car do they have more rings the motor runs but smokes it sat for a long time i was hope to stick rings in it and get by
http://www.348-409.com/ Does the smoke bellow continually? Any noises? You may be lucky to run some BG, super tune and oil change and have a 'driver' motor for a while longer.
no we had a hard time to get it to run you cant see behind it also it has alot of blow by the ring must of stuck other wise kind of hard to here any noize with stright pipe
I've never seen a 348 in a truck or bus from the factory but I haven't seen everything yet. Make sure its not a 409. Here's a pic of my '09 fresh from the truck then after a good cleaning and putting a rebuilt set of 348 3-2's on it.
had a friend who had grain truck with 348,,,,his son inherited it... always thought 348 was 348...409 same block..different bore??...I know they are popular..and getting harder to find...their are a few places that specialize in just the 348/409 http://www.348-409.com/ http://www.348-409.com/general.html 348 dipstick drivers side..409 on passenger side..
the last 3 number of the block is 655 when i looked it up it came to be a 348 but then i didn't look any harder, but the dip stick is on the pass side but the oil pan will fit both engine so the bast way i found is to look at the end of the crank, the way i read it they have a 7.75 comp in a truck the cars are higher
that is what one guy told me you could put car piston it it and it would come out to around a 9.5 comp motor good for a street car,
348 truck and car blocks are the SAME BLOCK. ALL 348s have a notch at the top of the cylinder regardless of it being a truck or car block. The crank is the same, the rods are the same. Yes if you use stock 348 car gable roof pistons you will get "9.5:1". Yes there is a truck specific casting number that ends in 655 but its the same too. Truck engines regardless of them being a 348 or 409 ALWAYS have the dipstick on the pass side-truck oil pan-and yes it will work in a pass car-just has the drain plug right on the bottom instead of the front edge.
The 655 block is what my truck 348 block was. It had the 333 heads on it with the small combustion chambers. Only one notch in the cylinder like a car like mr348 said. From what I have been advised, it will make a good street engine. I have found that Showcars is a good source for pistons, etc.
go over and visit the 348-409 site. There are a lot of guys over there that build these W engines. I believe Jim up in Canada has started a thread about the steps in rebuilding these motors and getting the best hp out of them. He campaigns a '55 Chev with a 409.
Show-cars is in Minnesota. Lamar Walden is also another great source for info concerning 'W' s. Especially if you decide to try and get some hp's out of it. Good luck.
thanks guys just wanted some thing driffernt for my hot rod im sick of seen sbc in every thing my truck is old this will fit in there good
i took to long to make up my mind and he sold it i thought he wanted to much for it. i bought a motor from a guy said it came out of a truck got it cheep he said he turn it over a year ago, found out by the crusher it was 3 years ago it is stuck bad glad i got it cheep maybe i can sell a few parts and get my money back out of it it is a 655 block with .040 pistons and 333 heads on it, i found a 348 with a block number 962 he is makeing shure it turns over
No, they're not all the same block. Explain the double-notch truck blocks. If the block is a 655, it's a good one. Considered the best of all the 348 blocks.
Only think I kept is the flywheel, distributor, the horseshoe front mount and the flat plate that goes between the engine and bellhousing.
A friend of mine bought a 409 out of a dumptruck. He had to bore it .030 because he couldn't find Std. pistons anywhere at that time. It took his 64 Impala SS down the road like a spotted ape! He got 8 MPG with one or two four barrels. Over the next few years he bought 2 or 3 348s being sold as 409s, one had tri-power. Couldn't give them away so he had to scrap 'em just for the room.
i have a almost a complete 348 missing the dist and front pulley came out of a truck the block is .040 and the crank is .010 on both
