Okay old timers, I've heard guys talking about soaking their brand new glasspaks and then burning the glass out of them. I remember our neighbor kid burning a brand new muffler and thinking he was nuts. Anyway, put a new header muffler on my Model A and it sounds like a friggin MG or sumthun.
That was the way to do it back in the day! Would I do it today, probably not. What sort of sound are you looking for? What you have described is what a 4 cylinder with a glass back sounds like.
Is the muffler toward the front, relatively close to the engine, with several feet of straight pipe after the muffler, exiting to atmosphere at the rear of the car?
It's coming right off the header collector. Well I thought if I could burn it out it might sound more gutsy, more like a straight pipe. It has a 6.0 head on it.
We used to run the car till it was nice and hot then shoot cold water up in there on the "glass", broke it right up. Now if you just have perforated metal sleeve up inside there it might not work so good. Maybe you need more motor, to get that sound you are after ?
21stud, here on the HAMB ran a straight pipe off of his header on a B motor. Sounded perfect and not too loud.
We used to get to highway speed and turn the ignition off, coast in gear then turn the ignition on, KaBoom, blows the guts out of it after a few times.
The back half is from my 68 chevelle 2.5" driver side tailpipe. All pipe, No muffler. I think it sounds like the Red Baron if I knew what the Red Barron sounded like.
