G'day all, I spend a lot of time in the shed, thought it was time to post up my build. I am heavily influenced by pre WW2 hop up activity, the R. Hodge T is a favourite of mine and I love Harry A Miller's work. So that is the direction for my Jalopy. I guess you could say that the term Hot Rod hasn't entered by 'build' vocabulary...dig I was offered a rough but complete 1916 Dodge Brothers tourer about the time I was offered some ridiculous coin for my '40 Desoto custom build. Which was a good thing because the build was stalling....I wanted to build an open wheeler. I dragged this car home with 2 1/2 cars worth of extra parts, took 2 days. I sorted what was worth saving and scrapped the rest. Ended up recovering 1/2 of the initial outlay. Did some research, spoke to the experts and drew up a plan. Spent a lot of time scouring for parts...and so to the build FINALLY ! The Chassis is '16 Dodge. Spent a lot of time grinding the heads off rivets and removing unwanted flotsam. Welded up all the holes and pie cut the front horns to lower the front end. Hand beat the original springs to the height I wanted and sent them off to be reproduced. The Axel is 34-35 Dodge. I have a rough Chrysler tube axle so I surgically the spring mounts from it and used them on this job. The spring's are fixed to the chassis via original Dodge rear mounts and at the front via modified dodge shackles. Wire wheels are off the same 34-35 Dodge. Worked out my wheelbase and raised the rear end for clearance. Pie cuts again. I am currently cacking up the rear suspension so more to follow. Cheers Sean
See plenty of old Dodge tourer body's on the hamb but not often that they still have a compleet windscreen still attached. Please keep posting progress.
This should be cool. I have a '19 or so DB touring front half that I plan on doing as a three springer at some point.
Thanks for the interest lads ! I was lucky to get the windscreen with it, I kept extra posts and cut these in half. I love the 3 springer dirt/board track deal !! I am trying to use original dodge Brothers parts as best I can. Some mods are required but that is half the fun ! I dig the concept of building your own car out of others cars...the whole Frankenstein thing. Like taking design ideas from other models and somehow melding them together. The build list thus far ; '16 Dodge Brothers roadster body and chassis unknown grill shell Mid '30's Dodge driveline and wheels Mid '20's Dodge dash and 30's speedo Mad Stewart Warner reverse sweep tacho And a wooden crate of other stuff to make it go. Should be back at it today... Cheers S
The turtle deck arrived...stoked ! Once the rear axle is dialled in, work begins on the body. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!

Haven't updated for a while, working on the Dodge. I built a citric acid bath to clean the tin up. 2m x 1.6m x .9m, 2000litres of water and 140 kg citric acid crystals. Approx 10 hrs of soaking and a light rub with scotchbrite pads. This tin hasn't seen day light in almost 100yrs. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Citric acid crystals? Where outside the hot rod world are citric acid crystals used? Is it a farm feed item? Does the vapor in the shop have an adverse affect on surrounding metals when you have the orange juice mixture working? Some acids that guys have used for rust removal seem to cause corrosion to other metals sitting around the shop.
Citric Acid crystals is indeed a cooking product among it's many other uses. I purchased it in bulk from a local wholesaler who supplies restaurants and like that. There is no vapour to speak of, and the smell is totally innocuous, and has had nil effects around the shop. When I am done it is safe to dispose into the vegetable garden. If this failed, Plan B was to make the worlds largest Margarita ! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Here is the '26 Dodge dash I'm using, before this went into the bath everything was rusted solid. Speedo, light switch etc. When I pulled it out and rinsed with fresh water I was able to undo every bolt and screw...also found a little 'jewel' under the crud ! Adelaide is my home town !!
