too bad; there's going to be several hundred disappointed folks at the hamb drags if you're not there...

  9. Bending Square Tube.

FWIW, you can use any kind of press... hell, I think you could even use a vise!

Might be useful in an area where you won't see the bend...

  10. You can see where I used these bent tubes... the seats have distinct bends in the bottom, and I was able to bend the tube to match!

This tube was .120 wall... a little harder to bend.

Would the tube stay in shape if you used a stronger frame, like heavy wall box, or will the trade-off between loose enough to move and tight enough to stop deflection still get the same result?

  12. I think it might even move the strongest of tube.

The span, and slack between the nuts and such prevent it from staying put.

I do think if you build the side plates with a little bend in then to pre-load the area... but then, like you say, it might make it tough to press.

Whacking the pooch it with a hammer or using your press works well.

1/4" wall tube might be something to try though!

Great tech info thanks Sam; very straight forward.

  16. Steve and I bent some tube last night... Need to do the second hoop over the head, and the helmet bars... it's coming along!

I am going to bend the other hoop over the head and take some pics of how I do it. Probably tomorrow!

LOL funny funny. Actually the word "Sandrail" sprang into my mind.

(Guys, Sam's a friend'o'mine, I can be a bit more cheeky than I would be with a stranger)

Sam, are you going to brace the rear rails to the cage? How does the tubing all fit within the body?

    Mart.

  21. Yep... there will be bars from the shoulder bar down to the rear rails and an X from the shoulder bar to the shock mounts...

I've just began the body fittin' scheme... it should fit! :D

    Sam

  22. Thanks Trent! I need 30 feet to do the whole bird cage... And was choking at the $270 I'd spend on JAZ 45.1 padding!

  24. Do any of you Old Skool HAMBers remember the tech post I did about 10-11 years ago where I turned a junkyard Datsun gas pedal into a spoon pedal?

    I still have it.

I never used it because the pivot point was wrong.

So I set out to make it work on The Drag Rod.

Cut this off... welded it back on.

    All ready to go!

Hey Sam...have you considered powder coating those aluminum seats? I had mine coated for $40.00 each, kinda makes them disappear.

  27. This stuff at least pads, that Jaz stuff is hard as a rock. Talking to the Orange Aid guy...............did you know a pine 2x4 will pass the SFI test for padding? No shit!
