    Hey all,

continuing putting in my 411s in my 9 inch, I found once I dropped in the gear and locked spool, in the carrier housing frame the ring gear is hitting the pinion bearing carrier. I went online and it says that it is a common problem when installing lower gears, and that they need to be ground down; but I wouldn't think 411s would be a "steep" or difficult gear. I was really surprised. Anyway, 2 sites online suggest using a bench grinder works best? and that you only need a 1/16th of clearance in the end between the ring and carrier/pinion bearing carrier, but what about balancing? I know I will not take off the exact amount off each tooth,. Does it matter? please comment on how to, suggestions, problems, etc.

Also, for all 9 inch buffs and gurus, my inner casing is stamped with a CI AWW 4025,;any info on whether good bad, whatever?

Do you have enough room to grind the pinion bearing carrier? I have built quite a few 9's and have not ground a ring gear.

Non stop, the sites said not to touch the hanger as they are too thin o begin with and that grinding lessons structural integrity. Not saying right or wrong,
    Just sayin'

Looking at it, it sure seems that the carrier being ground , just a 1/8 shaving off teh backside would make most sense; no balance issues, less work?

Is it the ring gear hitting the rear pinion bearing support where the small roller bearing goes?
If that's the case just take die grinder to the casting and smooth it down to clear the ring gear.

I think if you clean off the casting flash and smooth it out it will be better than a rough cast (less chance for a crack to start)

I've built several 9" Fords and have had to grind on the housings of nearly every single one. In fact, I just built one last week that required some grinding...and it was using a 2.75 gear. In that particular case I was swapping it from an open diff to a trac-loc. The new diff was made slightly different and the ring gear bolt heads were rubbing on the case.

thanks folks, but I am still unsure as to how and go. It seems like most are saying lightly have the carrier/pilot support for the pinion end.

At a loss still, help with a definitive answer please.
