I did not have room for a real tranny jack, so after thinking a bit came up with this idea. I was in a hurry so assembly was crude. As you see I took a piece of angle and welded a piece of pipe that fit inside an engine stand head. Welded a bolt to it and another 5" down for the link bar. Measured true length between the arm pivot and hook bolt, made link bar same length, welding in another bolt on the lift's main post 5" down from pivot to form a parallelogram. Only issue was stand head was a bit small - next time with make little brackets to hold trans but otherwise worked excellent. Range of motion is far superior to normal jack, and plan to use it on rear ends also.

Looks like it should work. Might have to steal that idea. Only problem I have is I always borrow the cherry picker.

Good thinking. And for us less fortunate souls rolling around on creepers - I bought this used Harley jack for $30 to install my trans. Craig's list is full of them.

Both you and the Hamber that used the Harley jack have come up with great ideas. I love it when creativity like this shows up. Damn fine ideas, keep them coming!

Remember when we could "muscle" them into position laying in the gravel ??

hell, I took a couple of the lighter automatics out with a piece of wood and a bottle jack! Lower it down, then tilt and let it slide down the board.

Manual transmissions on the other hand are light enough to muscle them up there. Had one laying on my stomach, then lifted it into position. That was a long time ago. Now a days a floor jack works just fine.

  10. Ok guys lets see both of them in action in a YouTube video!:D

Great idea on the HD jack. I muscled a Doug Nash 5sp into place the other day laying on my back. Think that's the last time ill do that. It was heavy, and I'm 71....

For us po folks... I ran my tranny in under the truck with my creeper and then strapped it up to my cherry picker through the driver's side door, lifted it up and wiggled her home, one man job.

That's a nice rig for the car lift people, you've given them something to build on, well done.

I have used a hoist with the cab off to do that.... I will be looking for an old bike jack asap! Thanks!

I don't have a hoist so that mod is out but I need to remember weld on a handle bar the next time the cherry picker is within reach of the welder. I've been going to do that since I bought the thing along with finishing the holder for the handle.

That is a great idea for those who have a hoist though.

    Okay, I'll bite.

What's the trick to lifting the transmission onto the picker?

manual no issue; automatic or differential a neighbor and a bottle of Corona...

  20. My cherry picker works great for lifting cabs, but I do prefer my forklift.

  21. Think Harbor freight has an adapter for a tranny that fits a floor jack that you could use on the cherry picker rig or any other type of lift .
