I don't remember the name of this car ( I think it was called the shark) but you can find the story of the car and the builder on the web site "Forgotten Fiberglass",This was a very early "Kit Car" he also sold a few turnkey models.

  18. Ammo belts were 27 feet long (Nine Yards) and when they were hard on a target and the gunners used all the ammo... it was said they used the "Whole Nine Yards"!

The Boulton Paul 'Defiant', an attempt to give a fighter both forward firing guns with protection from the tail.
It became operational in 1939 just in time to take part in the 'Battle of Britain'. As a fighter it was too heavy and was outclassed by everything that was thrown at it.
As a result it rapidly became the first dedicated night fighter in the RAF, as such it performed quite well until the Beaufighter and Mosquito's equipped with radar replaced them.
They saw out the War as gunnery trainers and Air/Sea Rescue spotter planes. A noble attempt at building a WWII version of the Bristol F2.B from WWI, although ultimately it was a failure.
I still have a soft spot for them and great respect for the Air Crews that operated them.

    In a wing over.

A 'Sting in the tail', the Defiant's turret fitted with 4 .303 machine guns.

A study of the 'Daffy' as they were called by their Air Crew.

Whoever suggested that everyone was thin in those days, was either ignorant or misinformed. That's a ridiculous idea to anyone who was alive in those days. You cannot make generalizations like that based upon photos you have seen.

  27. I wouldn't call them fat. Pleasingly plump. I like the one on the left. Is she topless? Post #76689 for those that don't know.

To quote Sgt. Hulka ("Stripes" - 1981): "Lighten up, Francis".

  29. A Defiant crashed during the war at the head of the valley where i grew up. Apparently the airframe and engine were left there for many years due to the inaccessability of the terrain. Story goes the engine is still there.
