I have a 1960 Chevy w 235 original engine. Need to replace the harmonic balancer seal. HB wobbles& is leaking oil-not much; just enuff to piss me off. My HB was pressed on-NO bolt. 1. How/What are the steps to remove HB 2.Steps to reinstall 3.3 days??? Thanks in advance
If the press-on damper is wobbling, you are soon to lose it, and perhaps experience some considerable damage in the engine compartment. You can borrow a puller, and installer from O'Reillys, or other auto parts stores. Since you are going to replace it, I recommend a bolt on style. You have to drill a hole into the end of the crank snout, and tap it for a 7/16 20 fine thread bolt. The bummer is that in order to do this, you will need to remove the radiator, and grill. Might consider some help, or an auto shop if you have not done this type of thing before. Good Luck!
I ordered a "repair kit" from rockauto.Thinking that should fix it.(leaking seal).Or should I just order a new HB?Where would I buy from?? Have a rt angle drill.That should help,right.? Havent done it b4 BUT AINT scared o it either....
Please do us all a favor and stop posting till you learn how, OK? On a 235 6cyl, I wouldn't worry about drilling and tapping for a retainer bolt, as I doubt you're gonna run it at high rpms anyhow. That "repair kit" is most likely a new seal and gasket plus a thin metal sleeve you push on the nose of the balancer to give the seal a new surface not grooved by long use. Not gonna do a thing for your problem, which is that the bond of the rubber that is sandwiched between the inner steel or iron hub and the outer metal ring is giving up and about to let the ring slide off and tear up all sorts of stuff on it's way out. As stated earlier, you can borrow (with a refundable deposit) a puller/installer @ Auto Zone or Advance.
Motor was dropped less than 6" onto ground.It was on a flat cart being pushed to truck;to take home;hit HB .It took the impact.I was hoping to be able to reuse the HB.It has less than 200miles on TOTAL rebuild.
One of the best things that you can do for your 1960 Chevy is to buy a "Factory Chevrolet" shop manual. It will show 99.999% of everything to fix a 1960 Chevy. You'll need a 1958 Chevy shop manual and a 1959 / 1960 supplement. Reprints are available and used ones can be bought pretty cheap on Ebay. They are well written, with very good illustrations. You'll be amazed at how simple a shop manual can be, compared to the ones for new cars.
didn't appear to be. In the center of the HB it was smooth-no wobble to it. Think Dave hit it dead on. My guess is the rubber cratered inside. Will update in a week or so...when HB is returned
I have one here you can have for the price of shipping. Probably about 13 bucks in a USPS flat rate box. It's 3/8 belt belt pulley,all good except a groove where the seal rides. A repair sleeve will fix it and they are the same as a Small Block Chevy.... PM me if you want it.
Find somebody with an older Hollander Interchange Manual, maybe somebody that's been in salvage yard business a long time. Why couldn't yours be repaired?
after you pull off the harmonic balancer have somebody start the engine and look carfully at the crank to see if there is a wobble or to see if the crank did get bent. We just did a 327 that had a similar problem and with the harmonic balancer off and the engine running it didn't leak any oil out the front and we were lucky that the crank was straight. We used a dremmel with 3 circular disks and cut a new keyway and it fixed our problem. Finding TDC was a problem.
235 damper fits on a 235-261 properly.There are several pulley sizes.. Others will press on like GMC 228-302, Chevy 230-292 and even a SBC... But things don't line up and or they need machining work.A 216 damper will fit ok but it's better to use the bigger 235 damper.
Egg shaped is what I was told;cost too much fr maching correctly. SO I am now on the hunt,maybe......
