Hello I picked up a 1969 meteor rideau 500(Canadian ford). I was assuming that it would be a 9" underneath. But I noticed that it doesn't have a removable centre section but a diff cover. I am confused as I though pretty much all fords were either 8" or 9" diffs. Here is a pic of one I swiped from google. Thanks.
From your description it's definitely not a 9", but I'm not enough of a Ford guy to tell you what rear is in it - Sorry!
Ford used the Dana 53, in a few models, in the 60's. Take a picture of the cover, dead-on, and post it.
yeah I went into a you pull and pay last sunday and they had a 72 ltd I was like this has got to have a 9 inch in it looked under it and NOPE I was like WTH is that I too didn't realize ford used anything but a 8in or 9 in except in the 4x4 trucks and as was posted no 9 in or 8in has a rear pan what engine is in the meteor?
A lot of the full size Ford cars of the later 60's and the 70's used a rear end with a cover on the back. Definitely not a 9".
Not shure of what year ford had used them but I had a 75 Lincon with a 9.5. Housing looked like a 9 and would take a 9 inch center section if you were to put one in. The Lincon center section was the off part, everything was different and slightly larger than a 9 inch. Used a flange style yoke, could not find anybody making gears for it at the time so it was ditched. Found it in a junkyard thought we were getting a steal, after we replaced what we needed to put some real gears in it we were broke and no deal at all. Kids we were learning the hard way.
Here's the website i used to ID the rear end in my 41 ford. I was told it was a GM 10 bolt. Turns out it was a Dana 44. http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml If none of these. I would do a search for "How to ID rear end" on google images and compare to what you have.
