I stopped by a place on the side of the road that had some old stuff. The chassis looks like it was once used as a trailer chassis. The car had wood spoke wheels with expanding shoe brakes on the rear axle only. The springs are quarter elliptical on all four corners. What car was this?
What makes it late teens Pete. I have a quarter elliptic chev chassis but am unsure whether its late teens or early 20s. What are the dateable features - Is it the dip in the front axle?
I wouldn't dismiss overland - there are certainly some features that are quite unlike chev. esp that U bolt. How many other US autos had quarter elliptics all round ?.
Sure looks like the front axle from the 1917 Chevy on this page http://www.automotivehistoryonline.com/chevrolet.html later jim
That was my first impression. I was thinking TT but Ford never did a spring set-up like that. I'd put my money on Chevy.
The "490" have the half left springs, the late 20's ones had longer frame rails full leaf spings that mounted on the front frame horns and mounts behind the front axle later kb
KB, how about the spindles, are they different between the two models? They work real well on Model T Ford speedster chassis. Bob
There seems to be a change in the spring to chassis mounting bracket from 490 to 1923-24 superior. The photo of the chassis below is labelled as a 1923 but does not use the U bolt mounting arrangement but I suspect it could be a pre 1923 with the U bolt set up for 23 & 24.
ok here is a 1924 superior chassis diagram showing the U bolt mounts so I suspect your chassis in 1923 or 1924 superior and not 490.
John Gerber's 490 based dirt tracker before he changed to a T chassis in 1924 and Ron Roycroft's 1924 speedster
I seen it while I was on the road with work, the car is about an hour north of Minneapolis. I have the owners contact information for whoever wants to save this chassis. $150.00 Is the selling price. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
