Got these wishbones with a chassis I bought. Was told they were 1932. They are about 30-31" long, from the cut to the stock weld. QUESTION IS ????? Are they long enough to use on a 32 Frame ?? With them cut this way, how to you weld in a bung ??? Any and All Advice will be much apprecaited
I know where the bung goes, but with the bones being cut as short as they are, the end opening is more oval then round, it looks as though the bung would be sitting in the middle of the oval, with too much room to fill in on top and bottom
When I did mine originally, I hammered the wishbone more round , slipped the bung in and welded it up. I don't remember how long mine were (I've since changed them out). but 32" inches sounds close if not right on. The attachments for the bungs on mine were on the very front edge of the X-member webbing.
Measuring from the yoke weld, mine are cut at 26", 29" to the center of the tie rod end. It's just about at the firewall. It looks like mine are sleeved down, then they used the split tube with a pinch bolt style tie rod. I went out and took a picture, certainly not as pretty as those bungs. They hang waay too low, one of these days I'll pie cut a set and raise them up. They keep getting banged up.
327-365HP....Thanks VERY MUCH for taking the time to send the photo, it sure makes it easier to see what we are talking about...AGAIN THANKS for the extra effort....it is much appreciated Les in Minnesota By the Way....DAMN NICE CAR !!!!
You can also splice in a section of cut off wishbone ends from another set. I wouldn't say they are TOO short to use, but they are a little shorter than you usually see. It would depend on where/what your steering setup is. I think most aftermarket hairpins are only around 32".
I have seen builders slice a notch in the bottom of the bone and heat and hammer the bone to insert the bung in snugly. HRP
...And without insulting you, you just published a photo of why I prefer using a bung or a heavy piece of tubing instead of a cut tie rod. Had that argument a couple of years ago where I was branded that most unholy of brands "untraditional" because of that belief.
Here's a couple of pictures a full length '32 wishbone piece. Should give you an idea of the overall size. Third picture has a section of cut off '48 wishbone next to it, looks like it might workable match at the 30" mark. You could have the '48 pieces if you want to try it. I added one of my "traditional" spit '34 wishbones to the last picture for needs louvers? viewing pleasure. Actually I like using cut off tie rods; but these tubes are a little long for me.
RICH B....Thanks so much for all your efforts....your photos REALLY show me what I DON'T have.....where bouts' in Minnesota do you live ???? You can email me directly if that is easier for you. I might like to take you up on your offer...Damn friendly of you AGAIN...Many Thanks...Les in Golden Valley [email protected]
No offense taken. That wishbone has been like that since 1965 when the flathead came out and the chevy went in. Doesn't mean it's right, just old.
