Bob...local Alaskan residents will probably confirm this reply, but I think the reason for the kinks in the pipeline are to allow for expansion/contraction in that land of extreme weather. If pipeline was perfectly straight, it'd buckle or pull apart during exp/cont.

Going underground occasionally allows migrating caribou herds to cross. Can't build the whole shebang underground 'cause it'd destroy the permafrost.

I lived in British Columbia for many years, and I'm loving your travelogue and narrative. Thanks tons.

That makes sense on both counts, can't make life difficult for those huge creatures can we?

Thanks for your comments, it's fun doing this.

This has been a great trip so far and we still have almost 2 weeks to go. I do kinda miss the warm weather and the fun things that us Wisconsin Hillbilly's do to cool off in the summertime.

Hi Bob, we haven`t met or talked, but your trip to Alaska and the fact that you are going to Kodiak later moved me to ask a favor, take a lot of pictures while on the island, especially if you can get on the naval base or I think it has been taken over by the coast guard now, I was stationed there for a year from 6 59 to 6 60 and the pictures and stuff I have found is not as I remember it, but then my memory isn`t that good any more either, the show on the weather channel has spurred my interest.

    it would be greatly appreciated.

Thermal expansion, and it makes the line more flexible in an earthquake.

I've heard a rumor there is occasional seismic activity up here. ;)

Mike, Bob has already gone and returned from Kodiak. The USN seaplane base there was indeed turned over to the USCG (Coasties). In today's world, anyone not having official business on base, not being escorted by someone who has legitimate access, or is not active duty/retired military, or a current DOD employee/contractor, can't drive onto a military establishment - or sit outside the base perimeter and take pictures. 9-11 and all that rot has created limited access to current military bases. Sort of like the "need to know" mentality has bled over into a "need to be there" scenario. John

Thanks for the reply, when I was stationed there I only hit the town of Kodiak 1 time and learned that the navy was not to well like and I of course was in uniform. all the historical stuff I have been able to dig up has missed the time frame that I was there.
from there to midway island, heck of a change Mike

    Bob,

Have been following your trip from the great white north to the real great white north. It looked like a wonderful time with good adventures around each corner. That old 292 did really well. Thanks for the coverage.
Missed seeing you at Columbus this year. Attendance was down and that made a bit better. See ya down the road!

Good Morning from Beautiful Downtown Delta Junction Ak. It another rainy overcast day but what the hell, it's Alaska.

Yesterday we got the car filthy again. Went on an epic saga of only 175 miles one way to Circle City Ak. at the end of the Steese highway on the Yukon River. It was named that because the early miners thought that it was on the Artic Circle but it ain't. The last 75 miles of the journey were on dirt or gravel roads that were less than supperb.

Of course it was rainy and froggy.

Nice Bull in a herd of about 75 on the top of eagle pass,( 3900 ft).

The fireweed really stands out when there ain't a lot of trees to block the view.

So much that it deserves a second shot.

This is a sample of the kind of road we were on.

Our destination, no fishing going on as the DNR closed the season to let the spawnners pass through.

While we were at the river this canoe pulled in piloted by a couple that looked damn near as old as us, they were completing a 4 1/2 week trip down the Yukon river of over 800 miles. WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The locals liked the Chebby even as dirty as it was.

The flood gauge, it happens every few years.

On the way back we hooked up with Mercmanak and his wife Beccy at this lodge that is owned by a friend of theirs, there was a wedding and one couple that was in town for the event was staying at the same motel as us, another small world incident.

It is decorated with all kinds of memoribila.

The owner, Ron has this stored in a neat attached garage.

It is guarded by this young lady, well maybe lady is a reach.

I wanted to buy this for our retirement home but Maggie was having none of it.

Allan & Beccy led us to the family diner in North Pole where they split a HUGE bananna split for desert.

I don't think there is any resemblance whatsoever.

Another welcome sign, this one has spirit though.

Even the light poles are themed.

That's it for now folk, tonight we will be in Chicken Ak at the Chicken Gold Camp. No phone or internet so will catch up from Dawson City Yukon tomorrow night.

Just read the whole thread and really enjoyed it! Seeing the pictures of the Black Hills brought back some childhood memories (my mom is from Rapid City); forgot how wide open it was. As for your pictures and the stories behind them I feel like I was right there. Subscribed and looking forward to more!

It has been said by many before, but I want to be Bob K when I am older. Notice I didn't say when I grow up, then I wouldn't have as much fun as Bob and Maggie. See you in Wendover in a couple of weeks Bob?

  29. Bob I don't believe we've ever met, but my address is Eland WI, so we may have. I actually live about 40 miles from Antigo.
Did you happen to know a gentleman that ran the "Heel and Toe" shoe repair in Schofield? He has passed now, but about 10 years ago, he and his wife drove their Model A to Alaska. I don't know if their trip was as extensive as yours, but he told some pretty neat stories about his trip.

Let's see now, where the hell were we???? Oh yeah, North Pole Alaska. We happened to get up close and personal with this critter on the road to our stop for the night.

One of the few benefits of all of the rain we have been having is the chance to see some of these.

Right on the side of the road, mama teaching baby how to run, they can actually move really fast when they want to.

This is how they get the pipe line across a river where it ain't part of the bridge like it is across the Yukon at Yukon crossing. They build their own bridge for it, an engineering masterpiece.
