I have a set of heads, from what I was told they are 302 heads and my research tells me the are, but how can I tell if they are DZ or not? Also, wondering what they are worth..
For starters, do the last 3 digits of the casting number end with 186?? Also check the intake valve diameter with a pair of calipers... They should check at 2.020 inches... The exhaust valves at 1.600 inches.... You could also check the combuston chamber volume which should be around 65 cc's..
Here's a cool article I found for adjusting the the valves with a .030/.030" cam in a sbc.... Check it out! www.camaros.org/302valves.shtml
I have one of the four barrel manifolds. Someone 'Knife edged' the divider though. Need to do something with it. The only use I've gotten out of it so far was the subject of an oil painting. That and it's fun telling people what it is.
I don't know that I'd give up a nut for it. But I wouldn't hesitate to beat a hooker with a kitten for one.
Those dz,s were bad mofo, s scared the piss out of me in 69...........and the 1st vid the red head with the black shirt .........cool what a drag strip I,m envious
I re-read this article again and I couldn't believe that the stock factory chevy stamped steel rocker arms ratios varied that much from 1.37 to 1.50. WoW!
Those stock rockers were all over the map. I had to go through 64 of them to get 16 that were the same for a 283/220 engine is NHRA Stock.
Is there a way to check the rocker ratio of a stamped steel rocker arm??? If so, please explain! Thanks!
I've got a box out in the barn with 7 Jahns 301 pistons & rods - guess where the 8th went, and why it went ...... Oh well, in '68 good 283s were VERY abundant!
Hi Weasel, if you out there... would you (or anyone here) by chance know or ever heard of any of these 32V Weslake heads that were made for the SBF engines???, I heard from a guy here there were, but I have not been able to find any info on it yet.
Your picture shows that Camaro with power brakes? I was always under the assumption no power brakes on Z/28s 67-69?
The date code will get you pretty close (DZ is 1969 only). But I don't think the heads were 302 exclusive either. Also, I've seen lots of heads that have been modified for 2.02/1.60 valves and guide plates. The factory 2.02 chambers are machined around the intake valve to unshroud them. No machining, not factory 2.02s. Larry T
Thanks Mitchell , I learn't something new from this thread . fifTysix , 333Halfevil , Back in your box ... While Mitchell may be a dreamer , just like the rest of us ! I have never witnessed him needing to speak shit ....
The ole boy who built my D/G Stude back in the 60s bought a 1967 MO 302 from the Chevy dealer and had it balanced and blueprinted from the crate. He said it was a good thing he did as a couple rod bearing clearances were to tight! I bought the motor from him( with factory reciepts and shop tickets showing all work) and put it back in the Stude and ran it on the street and raced it at Cordova Drags and Byron Dragway back in the eighties. It ran 12.5 smokin the tires in all gears! I shifted that 302 at 8000! If I shifted at 7900 or 8100 it slowed down! Man was that thing fun on the street with 5:38s and a 4-speed! I usually ran a 3:08 open rear gear on the street and never did have it flat out! I know 66mph was 2600 rpm ( courtesy state police) and I had it wound up to 6600 when racing a Trans Am one day...I'm sayin around 150 + mph...That old Stude was rockin and rollin!!!!!NO B.S.!!!
I used to make my living as a heavy line tech for Chevrolet. I saw a couple of DZs during my stint. It's been said before - get some gears and hold on! They do like to rev!!
Wasnt a DZ motor but i built a 302 and put it in my midengine corvair a while back. It was bad ass. Only problem I had was I couldnt afford to buy gas for it. With 12 to 1 octane booster wouldnt cut it. Had to buy racing fuel at $10 a gal. Since I wont have a car I cant drive it went on CL and ended up in Baltimore and the new owner is real happy with it.
In '73 my wife and I bought an all original (which at the time wasn't all that rare) '69 RS/Z28 for $1300.00. The highest gear ratio you get get with the 302 was 3.73. That really wasn't low enough as they had absolutely no torque at all. I ended up putting 4.56 gears, headers, Lakewood slapper bars and seven inch wide M/T cheater slicks and run 12.20's shifting at 7500 and going through the lights around 7200. This was my everyday driver until late 1975 when I decided to "knock it in the head" and make a drag only car out of it with a big block, ladder bars, fiberglass frontend, etc. Pretty smart fella, huh? It would have been worth $60,000 to $75,000 today with the RS option.
The 3.73 gears were standard for the Z/28... If the original owner wanted to, he could have checked off on the option list for a lower or higher gear ratio.. 3.55's, 4.10's, 4.56's... etc..
Dang near these days... I've owned 4 real 69 Z's over the years, still have the Daytona Yellow car that the engine pic is from. It mostly just sits collecting dust in the back of the garage. I hang onto it since I know if I ever do let it go, I'll never be able to afford to replace it.
