Welcome! This will be the hotbed of activity over the course of the weekend, providing you with live updates of about our journey to the Meltdown Drags in Byron, Ill.

From left to right...Andrew, Zach and Nick. I'm behind the camera, per usual.

I’ll break the ice with a simple Q & A:

Q: Who are you?
A: Here’s what the logbook reads:

Me
Name: Joey Ukrop
Occupation: Journalist, Pool Manager
Hometown: Novi, Mi.
School: University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo.
Interests: Film cameras that don’t work very well, Field Notes notebooks and anything involving Futura Bold typeface.
Favorite piece of speed equipment: Roto-Faze

My Friends
Name: Andrew Ukrop
Occupation: U.S. Army, Pool Manager
Hometown: Novi, Mi.
School: Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va.
Interests: Overalls, 4.10 gears and sombreros.
Favorite piece of speed equipment: 6-71 blower

Name: Zach Gearns
Occupation: Odd Jobs
Hometown: Northville, Mi.
School: Northern Michigan University, Marquette, Mi.
Interests: Facial hair, ham, Hawaiian shirts and telling it like it is.
Favorite piece of speed equipment: What’s speed equipment?

Name: Nick Giacalone
Occupation: Small Business Owner, not as odd of jobs as you’d like
Hometown: Cottage Hills, Ill.
School: Lewis & Clark College
Interests: Mustaches, kittens, and expensive couches.
Favorite piece of speed equipment: Not sure, but I get jazzed about rare or sort of rare mulit-carb intakes for overhead valve engines.

Q: What’s up with the car?
A: As I previously stated, the car belongs to none other than Steve Bailey (Monsterflake). It’s a 1964 Pontiac Catalina 2+2, powered by a big block Pontiac. If you’ve ever spoken with Steve, you’ll know that he’s a connoisseur of obscure and obsolete wheels. Well the big Big Cat exercises this fact—it sports Motor Wheel Spyders on all four corners.

Q: What exactly are we planning on doing?
A: Well you see, Andrew just got back from his government-funded vacation to Fort Lewis, Wa. and everything aligned for us to make it to the Meltdown this year. We’re going to be reporting, camping, spectating and enjoying everything the event has to offer.

Q: What equipment will you be using?
A: Aside from the two tents, a couple of sleeping bags and various items purchased at garage sales, not all that much. It’s all pretty basic, ’65-ish stuff. The biggest departures from the era-correctness are my Nikon D7000, Nikon D100, laptop and voice recorder…and my HAMB app to give you guys live updates. Don’t fret, I’ll be shooting three rolls of 35mm with my hand-me-down Konica Auto S2 for a more authentic feel.

If you’re feeling high-tech, follow along on the Instagram tag #HAMBMeltdown2013 or stay tuned here.

A striking mid-century rest stop...somewhere in Illinois

Friday, July 19

After successfully driving through the night, we've made it from Northville, Mi. to Nick's in Cottage Hills, Ill. The only casualties were an opossum on a lonely country road (it was ugly, anyway) and my eardrums from Andrew's professional grade singing (sic).

Time for some sleep. More to come in a few hours.

I didn't get my rail done in time, so I'm staying home to finish it up for some drags in two weeks. So I'll be watching. Thanks.

Since I am such a responsible entrepreneur, I am here in the office finishing up some work. The boys are outside fixing a leaky valve cover gasket and a wonky head lamp. Hopefully they can get all of that buttoned up and then we can throw our junk in the trunk and head north!

here's an acknowledgement to everyone that's had their hands on this car. without the help of a couple dozen guys, it wouldn't be on the road at all. truthfully, there are guys whose names i can't remember, and several that i'm proud to call friends. thank you.

good luck on the trip and have fun!

2:13pm Saturday. Yikes, very very scary moment here at the drags. A yellow and maroon F.E.D. did his burnout and started to back up then went forward and hit the wall. Im not exactly sure what happened but it seems like the throttle stuck and he was against the wall right in front of us. His car was against the wall, throttle punched, and tires smoking. Nobody knew if they should get close and extinguish or stay back in case it blew. The poor driver was just sitting there, helpless for a good 40 seconds while the engine revved and the tires spun. A few guys came and went back, wanting badly to help but scared for it to blow. A guy came and started spraying the extinguisher and eventually the engine shut off. Unfortunately the paramedics have the driver on the track. Everyome
Please keep the driver in your thoughts and prayers. Im sure the paramedics are doing all they can and lets hope ots nothing too serious.

2:26pm. They took the driver off the track on a stretcher in an ambulance. A very unfortunate accident for a driver who was probably so excited to have fun today. Please keep him(or her?) in your thoughts and prayers. There can always be more cars built, but we still hate to see this site, especially since we are unsure of the drivers health. We hope that the rest of the weekend is safe and there arent any more unfortunate accidents. Oh and 1 more note, along with the guy who extinguished the engine, another fellow took the shirt off of his back to smother the intake. Thanks so much for these guys. Things may have been worse. Hope the driver is ok....the digger should have had a master shut off located on the back of the digger if it was a legit and inspected racecar ?

I seen the pics in another thread of the accident......way too much tire smoke generated quickly engulfing the whole digger..Only a crew member would have known exactly where the shut off was located in all that smoke......The smoke no doubt made it difficult in many way's.......If this turns out to be heat related.........crewmembers must watch one another to ensure all is staying hydrated......heat is brutal when all suited up and waiting in line...I have baked myself at HRR in Bowling green.......Glad to hear the driver will be alright and wish them a speedy recovery, they have a cool digger to get fixed back up....Littleman

5:15 pm Saturday. Just got news from the track anouncer that the driver involved in the wall collision is doing okay with only 3 broken ribs. Thank goodness. That could have been so much worse!
