Pushing the envelope in any activity has it's risks but the quest for speed on land has fewer ways to forgive than most. A lot of brave and talented people have given their all in this environment knowing the risks but still reach for the record. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Sad news but knowing that he died doing what he loved is a little comforting.

Sure beats a long, slow and suffering death like far too many experience.

    RIP Bill

Very sad news, I had been following his story since he broke the record and was really impressed with his DIY style. RIP.

Bill was one of motorcycling's greatest speed racers going back to the beginning at Ormand Beach. I watched him break the record at 278 mph at Maxton in 2010 and took the first picture afterwards. There was not a nicer or more humble racer. This news is very hard to swallow for me.

    My condolences to his family.

From the Loring site. I thought this was poignant.

"Land speed records are a dream of many, an obsession of some, and reality for a determined few. It is a quiet pursuit by quiet men in garages on late nights and endless weekends"

It takes unbelievable passion and determination to accomplish what Bill Warner did and even though he's paid the highest price his name will be written in the history books along side Burt Munro and other legends and that's no small feat.

Most guys who pushed the envelope like Bill Warner do so in their daily lives as well. Not him. He was a marine biologist who raised tropical fish for a living.

I met Bill in 2011 when he broke the world Record. I was running Long Shutdown at Loring at his final run this year. I said we were giving the two hundred mph guys two fingers and a thumbs up, when they past our tent and would give him three when he broke 300 in the mile. He said that if he failed, to just give him one. I said we can't do that!

The attached photo is of the hat he signed for me in 2011, just after he broke the record.

    God Speed Bill Warner!
