This brings back memories. I loaded everything in the world on these birds. In a place called Phan Rang Vietam. Hud

Interesting photo. The only year the Scarab's competed in F-1 was 1960, the only race that I can find that they had a number 48 was Monaco, the only cars to compete that season wearing number 40 were Jo Bonnier, BRM at Argentina and number 40 in this photo is not a BRM but a Cooper, and Masten Gregory, Cooper-Climax, at the French Grand Prix and at Monaco. Since neither of these cars in the photo qualified for the Monaco Grand Prix I can only assume this is practice prior to the 1960 Monaco Grand prix. Lance Reventlow was the assigned driver for the number 48 and Chuck Daigh was assigned number 46. But I assume either driver could be in the 48 in this scene. The tree shadow and wide out-radius makes me believe that it is turn 18 (Anthony Noghes), but if anyone has a better idea as to the corner I would
    like to hear it.

PS: Check out the Ackerman on the Cooper.

So, where are they now? Front to rear:

784: Sent to MASDC (for scrapping) in 1981, BUT rescued and now at the Pima Air and Space Museum in AZ
781: Crashed off Long Island in 1960 from engine fire; pilot bailed out OK
778: On display at the New England Air Museum

Good info there, it always fascinates me to find out the fate of retired aircraft. I do have one question though, just what the hell is that guy doing above the nose of that first Thud?!

  21. Doc, it looks like he's hooked up the dolly to 80 and waiting on a tug to pull it.

I love looking at old photo's from another era.

Old Photo's really tell a story about a time when everything was just more fun and life seemed to be much more innocent.

Everything from the building to the cars just seemed more elegant and straight forward.

I miss those day's more each day as I get older.

  23. Looks like it to me as well. That's a serious No-No in today's Air Force. Quality Assurance will ruin your week if they catch you doing that now.

While the aircraft images abound... and just for the folks who've no idea where all those aircraft mechs and pilots returning from WWII and the Korean war got some of their hot rodding tricks, parts and training... here are some shots from the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH. I believe this is a F-86 and it's been partially "skinned" for your viewing pleasure. Remember, this is 50's technology. Fairly tidy packaging, eh? Gary
