Hi folks, new to the site and amazed by the amount of information. I would love to hear from others running a hot rod studebaker, the cars that invented cool. My 58 was worked over in the 80's with a 400 smb, 350 auto, powerbrakes up front, and an 8' ford diff.
I like Studes real well I have got a '53 Commander project. Although I doubt that the statement " the car that invented cool" is accurate otherwise they would still be in business. They were not the car of choice when they were still being produced and cool was available back then. Welcome to the board anyway I still like Studes real well.
I've got a 49 pickup with a 350/350 combo corvette front suspension notched rear sits about 3.5 inches ride height with 20" rims flat pearl green paint and an awsome cruiser
Great rides all. I especially appreciate the trucks - I just love rodded Studes. Anybody see a '50 black bullet nose salt racer? I saw it 2 years ago at Goodguys in Columbus. It had been chopped, sectioned and all the fenders removed with large thin wheels. It was the meanest looking thing. Did not have a chance to talk to the owner and I haven't see it since. Beautiful car.
My first truly fast car was a '53 Commander coupe with a 331 caddy. I bought it with a bad motor (spun bearing) for $35.00 off the Dodge dealer in Attleboro MA. I bought a '52 caddy 4 door sedan for $8.00 that had a good motor. Can you imagine buying a good running caddy for eight bucks? haha, I did, put that motor in the Stude and off i went. Talk about great memories.
welcome to the HAMB. I've Had acouple over the years. Now I'm building a T ute with a Stude 289 in it. Born and raised in South Bend, I've been around Studebakers all my life. There is a Studebaker group on here also.
here's a little "Mice Rod" in the works ... 50 Starlite Champ sitting on a Chevy S10 frame, tubbed, Currie rear end, mild 350 chevy / turbo 400 ..
Kool rides all! Bay Barn that cars sounds like a blast. I have had thoughts of wedging a big old 500 ci in my Stude, who knows. Obsolete - I will. Love the bullet nose Cruzer
Hi Ed, I'm getting a 1953 2 door Commander coupe. I have a Chev 350LT1 wit T56 manual trans, air cond etc. I want it as a daily driver. My problem. To avoid major surgery, what do you recommend for the front suspension.I need it to handle reasonably well. Modify it or ??? Brakes I can sort out with Corvette brakes and calipers. You advice would be appreciated
I like Hot Rod Studies here is my 46 pickup you don't see many of these running around. I don't know if it looks cool but I feel cool driving it!
I had five until this morning. Sold two and gave one away. Got to make room for my next one. 1959 Silver Hawk which was my first car. The wife and I plan to re-creat it and modernize it a little to make it cruiser friendly. I also will be driving the Dutch Treat Racing 1960 Lark at Bonneville next year. Can't get enough of the Stude power. Welcome to the club. Dan
Hi Mike - A friend of mine put a front clip on his 58 Hawk using a mid-80"s GM frame from a Monte Carlo. It worked out real well. You can also get tubular a-frames and assorted go fast parts because these frames are very popular with the circle track racers.
WOW! Studebaker should have made a panel wagon with a bulletnose. That is an amazing custom that looks like it could have been factory...
