Big argument as usual with lots of beer over a silly question- what do you think is the percentage of pre 1975 cars that the speedometer actually works. This includes cars that did not originally come standard with speedometers. out of the collection of 20 cars i am associated ( years 1913-1978- mostly 1920's and up ) there are 3 cars that have working speedometers which is 15%.

Is it the common opinion that the percenatge holds true among the general car community?

    How about your car(s)?

as usual the 30 pack of Genny Light and bragging rights are on the line here.

Thanks for any and all opinions

Do you consider it a "working" speedometer if there's wrong size tires and it's off 5mph?

    Edit: My point exactly ^^^^^^^^^

as long as the speedometer is reasonably accurate which means mechanically functions. It can be off 5-10 mph as long as its off 5-10 mph all the time.

and yes---Genny Light is a real beer--and usually there is switch off to Labatts Blue every other time.

Good God,Genny Light? Well, at least we know one person who drinks that stuff. It may be fermented, but it's not BEER. 30 GL don't equal one case of real stuff.

At least try Saranac-it's made up that way and is pretty good-there's a nice variety case. Right now, I prefer Yard's-small brewery in Philadelphia.

Ach you posted too fast. Labatt's is almost beer-you need more of an education that speedos, my friend. :)

i guess the main objective is does the general car community focus on other parts of thier car more. Speedometers can really be a pain in the ass

  11. My '32 has a speedo that works but it is off by at least 5 mph. My Model A sedan does not have a speedometer. I use the tachometer to gauge how fast I am going. It's pretty accurate, I've only gotten one speeding ticket in it in thirty years of driving it.

Your Pacers don't meet the pre-75 criteria, dude.

    Your poll is flawed.

  13. i have working speedometers in both of my hot rods.....and getting them to read accurately is not hard to do if you have a modern transmission. drive/driven gears are easy to come by for GM th350/400/700 etc

The three 32 fords I built all had working speedos. I worked on the speedo gearing to calibrate them accurate, along with the fuel gauges.

busted on my own question but-

i like the watching RPMs idea but tachs are brutal for 6 volt cars.

the Speedo in my 48 reads a bit faster than I'm going,so a friend pulled up next to me on the highway in his 50 Olds,I figured we were doing about 65,kept it steady for a little over 5 miles,so when we got to our destination I asked him "exactly how fast were we going? " He sez about 120

  20. I currently have 9 cars, 8 of them older than 75. The Speedometer works in all of them except the Anglia which doesn't have one, but it's OK because the nice person in the timing tower tells me how fast I went every quarter mile.

And the fact that you drink shit beer and have two Pacer's should make all of this irrelevant, you have much deeper seeded problems.

Mine works, but it's off by about 10 MPH. It's a cheap Eqqus brand and I just replaced it 3 days ago. I only really use it for the trip meter because I don't have a gas gauge.

I found an amazingly easy way to recalibrate a mechanical speedo.

    It even passes NC inspections.

If it wasn't in my glass buggy I'd enter it during tech week :D

I went a few years without a sppedometer, and found it to be a simple fix. Won't go without a functional one again.
