License plate TOPPERS.....let's see 'em!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by KIRK!, Aug 30, 2006.

  1. Jeff,

Thanks for the compliments! The lady is a model that posed with my car for a photo shoot that will be featured in a 2012 calendar (I'll trade one for the 2012 "Junkyard" calendar from you!). Still waiting for you to visit the garage and get your rootbeer float!

Aww. The Junkyard calendar's a present-no need for a trade, but I'd love to have your car's calendar. I love root beer floats (black cows in my day), but I might wait until it is just a tad warmer.

Semi-related question; Found a Dekalb topper (see NitroFC's post on page 10), that has some surface rusting/pitting.
Any recomendations on what to use to clean off the rust without damaging the original finish?

    Thanks.....Roger

  4. Good question! I have a topper from my Dad's high school (Gatesville, TX, 1941) that is in similar condition. I'd like to rehab it and get it up on the garage wall.

I bought this to hang on the wall just to remind me of the great times and finds that I had at the spring Beehive show in Charlotte. I think it's a city tax type of thing. Northern Va. had a bunch of county tax tag toppers in the 50s-60s. They were not very popular.:D It was cheap and it does bring back great memories.

  11. The Virginia county/city tags you're talkin' about were in use until 1972 and then they switched to County/City windshield stickers. The tags/stickers were an indication that the "Personal Property Taxes" had been paid on the vehicle for that year. Welcome to the Commonwealth of Virginia.....

Anyhow, with the advent of electronic tag readers n' CAD units in/on po-lice cars, the county/city sticker was done away with...when they run your vehicle tag they know if you're current on your taxes.

Here's my 1963 Fairfax County tag:

Here is my license plate topper. It's the Speed-On Big Boy, Hell Ain't Half Full. I made it from a sheet of copper. The lettering is hand painted by COOP.

COOP as in Greg "COOP" Cooper?

I have the opposite of that... It reads "slow down"

All these toppers are really cool but the best one of all time is the OFC of the HAMB Old Farts Club......

If you're from Bloomington then you have most likely seen him at the BTT50's. He's there every year pinstriping and painting cars. COOP does a lot of Rat Fink paintings as well.

I actually drive my hot rod slow and cautiously:D My Model A is small and low so many people don't see me coming. My heads like an owl as I'm afraid I'm gonna get hit. Perhaps mine should also read "Slow Down" and not "Speed-On" :)

This tag and topper were on my '36 when it was parked in September of 1956.

Yes, I am quite familiar with COOP. I have been visiting with him every year at BTTF for quite a while.

Here is mine... In a Poncho with a straight 8 and Hydra-Matic I definitely need it! The bracket is long gone, but I have a few ideas on how to mount it.
