I got a new project, an almost finished 65 Riviera. The Pre owner started the resto in 88, drove her once to his own wedding in 89 and parked it ever since. He´s moving to florida and selling his stuff in Europe, so I ended up with a brandnew 65 Rivi. All that´s left to finish is the interior but the shift is challenging me, hahaha. I don´t want to break it, so can anyone of you guys give me the details on how to remove this little sucker? Thanks a million!
It probably has a set screw near in the chrome base of the knob or in the lower part of the knob. HRP
Highlander, that's alright. I really deserve that, hahaha I looked for a set screw but couldn't find one... Maybe i should look closer...i dont think it is a screw on type knob, it won't turn in any direction...
It unscrews! Might have to get a set of channel locks on there for grip, just be mindful of scratches and teeth marks! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Ok, no set screw there.. I tried to unscrew it ( counterclockwise of course) I can turn like a half turn back and forth... May you have to pry the plastic insert out to ut I´m worried to break it....any more ideas?
Wrap an old leather belt around it and use channel locks. Twist on that mofo. Worse comes to worse I'm sure it's a catalog item.
If you wreck it, then I would remove the handle from the column and place the knob in a vice and crush it. I have had to do that before. I think a lot of the knobs are a friction fit and a b8st8rd to get off. Good luck, try the belt thing, that may work....
If it's 2 piece, possibly the assembly comes apart to reveal an inner c-clip. Later year GMs also had a clip under the knobs but the push button top came off 1st anyway.
I am thinking that you push the button down as you turn. But It has been a long time since I put carpet in one.. Good luck. Jack
it just unscrews counterclockwise... if it hasn't been modified.. you may have to soak it with some penetrating oil... the belt trick should work.... the shifters/knobs aren't hard to come by here in the states nice car btw.... the riv owners org is worth the money....(tell them I sent ya
I got it off finally. It´s just screwed on, but mine had some loctite on it which made it harder to break loose. Thanks for all your help! The leather trick plus a set of pliers were stronger than the loctite
