Are we talking "Grant" as in Grant Piston Rings from years ago? My mom worked there from 1960 till about 2000. I vaguely remember some of the cars they campaigned including the Olds Toronado with the second motor in the rear. It was funny seeing dual gas pedals inside the car!

 

Looks like it's still wearing a lot of it's original paint, too! Pretty cool. You're the most American (motors) guy I've ever met.

Man O Man, Thats great to see what you been after all these years. In the Los Angeles area, I remember that car racing at Lions Drag Strip, old Irwindale Raceway and Orange County Intl Raceway. Good Luck and enjoy life!

I went to Jr high school with Les Shockley (Pasadena, CA, a long time ago!). After he graduated, Les worked for Hayden Profitt, who ran the car, before he went on to race jet trucks. If anyone would know about the Grant Rebel, Les would. I tried to find him but only found videos of the various "Shockwave" trucks he ran...but if anyone here knows his contact information, please add it (I remember seeing Les working on the car at Irwindale, so I know he is familiar with it.

My memory is that Frank Huzar and Dave Jeffers had a hand in building it, remember that the front crossmember was rounded instead of straight, and it had coil-overs and a straight tube axle. And, of course, the AMC nitro motor and, as AMC insisted, an AMC rear end.

Congratulations on your find, another classic saved!

 

Had a 69 390 AMX as a kid...Been a fan of AMC ever since. Looking forward to the resto.

haha, thanks, but that is not me in the picture. That is the previous owner Gary. He wanted to deliver it to me. I think that if he didn't like me or didn't like where he was going to leave the body, he would just take it back home with! Gary was very passionate about the car, life just kept him from completing his dream.

 

No chassis. I have been told that it was used on a couple other funny cars in the early 70's and was used up..then cut up and destroyed (scrapped).

 

It is a little longer than a stock Rebel. What shocked me is the grill/ tail lights, emblems etc. are original equipment!
