Clutch Area, Spring Pressure and Diameter

    Would decreasing the surface area of clutch disc friction material, say cutting back half of the inner diameter and leaving the outer circumference to the middle in place, tend to make it grip better by increasing the PSI on the remaining lining, given the spring pressure remains constant?

    I see some drag racing discs that are segmented instead of solid, same idea?

  2. Same idea. Back when 327 was the biggest motor you could get in a Chevelle, an older guy down the street was street-racing one and one trick he used was a 10 1/2" clutch disc in an 11" clutch. He explained that it held every bit as good but the lighter mass allowed the synchros to work easier and he was able to shift faster and more reliably.
