SORRY...Couldn't Resist !!! Seriously though....I have a 32ply coupe body, when I bought it...the Knurled Windshield Slider Hold Downs (Da NUTZ), were on it and have been on it for a good long time.. The appear to be seized to the posts, the Nutz of course look to be Aluminum and the posts are Steel.....My main concern is not breaking the posts..... At last resort, I guess I could cut off the NUTZ, and find or make new ones...but would like to use as much of the original car as possible.... Any and All Advice or Suggestions on how to loosen them will be much appreciated... Thanks in Advance Les in Minnesota
Spray it with PB BLaster or WD40 and wrap it with masking tape,,drag out the channel locks and give it a turn,,those pieces are stronger than you think. HRP
I could not tell from your picture if the nuts were open or closed like an acorn nut; If open I would try heating the nut and then applying paraffin wax, you just want it hot enough for the wax to melt and wick into the threads. There is a chance you may discolor or ruin the nuts since they are aluminum.
Heat it up. Spray with penetrant. Let it cool off. Heat it up. Spray with penetrant. Let it cool off. Heat it up. Spray with penetrant. Let it cool off. Break out an old leather belt and the channel locks. If it don't budge, repeat 'til it does. Take advantage of different expansion rates when you can.
Aluminum expands more than steel. So get out the electric heat gun and heat it up good. Now twist it off with channel locks, then go have a beer. Edit: Mashed beat me to it.
If you can get any liquid to the threads at all, you can also try heating it up and melting paraffin on it in any place that it will seep onto the threads. The paraffin wick itself between the two and almost always does the trick. Regular old candle wax works too.
