Would like to maybe install in my 37? Need your help to verify if possible? Only could get these pics so far
There should be casting numbers on the side of the block for you to decode, and the -# after "318" (ie, 318-3, etc.) means something too. This is for the common '60s - '80s 318, not the "Poly" '60s - that's a different engine entirely. I can't tell much from the pic. Spray can rebuild or serious go-through?
I believe it looks to be mid-70s and maybe a truck engine with the center dump manifolds. I could be mistaken.
impossible to tell year from the pic but as was stated it does have truck exhaust manifolds on it at least on the driver side
Can't really see in the pic, but if it's a rear sump oil pan it's a truck engine, if it's a center sump it's from a passenger car. Other than that, it's realllllllly orange.
Yes they do. Oh, and it's a 318 and 904. Fantastic if you have a boat that needs an anchor, or don't mind being the last to pull in. The 318 can be made to make decent power, but the 904 is worth more in aluminum scrap than it is as a transmission.I've burned up a few behind mild 318's. Get a 727 and the appropriate torque converter.
most big block and hemi racers use the 904 guts in the 727's because the 904 has the lower first gear its close to 1to1 where the 727 is like almost 1.5 to1 the 904 is agood trans not as stout as a 727 but its a good trans id rather have the 904 then the 318 of the two but together the combo would make agreat reliable cruiser combo
Hey vanner68. A boat anchor, huh. And a 904 isn't any good? I worked for chrysler for 42 years and those 318-904 combos hauled a lot of iron around for many years trouble free. That same setup has pulled my 29 essex around all over the place for years. A fact is that the 904 that you've blown up so many times is the choice transmission to put behind some big mopar engines for racing due to light weight and lower internal friction. Nhmikel, the casting nuber on the block will tell you the year 2536030 1967-75 4006730 1976-79 4104230 1980-83 4027163 1980-85 4027593 1980-85 4323302 1986-90 53005714 1990-91
Well we can see you have no idea about mopars. First 904 are killer trans and will hold plenty of hp and torque. Second 318 are no worse than a 283, 307 and definitely better than a 305. Pro trans uses 904 guts in their th350,c-4,c-6,727 and have plenty of record holding cars running their "weak" 904 gut trans.
A 904 would do fine behind any 318. but under anything bigger I wouldnt, with out aftermarket internals (that most drag racers run). I had a stock 904 behind my warmed over 360 after constant drag racing/and daily driving and it lasted about 3 years before grenading apart. but I replaced it with a stock 727 and its still going strong for the last 4 years. Great trans not a bad trans by any means but not bullet proof, like its being made out to be here.
