First Car Project - 52 Chevy Coupe

  1. I just picked up a 50 styleline myself. luckily mine runs and drives and has new brakes on it. eventualy I too will be doing the ls swap for fuel economy and power.

    I love the enthusiasm. This is my first build, and I dove in head first, and NOW I wish I had started smaller. Good advice to heed on here.

    FWIW: The original inline 6 + transmission probably weighs a LOT more than an LS1 or a small block would.

    I'm a real young (15) and I'm going all traditional with my build. I wouldn't know where to start with a fuel injected engine LOL two different ends of the spectrum I guess. Good luck with your coupe. And your new house

    Nice car to start with. Should be an interesting build.

    Maybe you or someone else in this thread can answer a question for me...
    The wheels on your car (presuming they are 15") - Is the diameter where the rivets are between the centre and the ring approx 13 3/16" and is the bolt pattern 5 on 5 ?

    I'm trying to replicate the look of early 60's nascar wheels for my '62 Pontiac. I have 8" rings that I'll be welding new centres into. These early 50's chev centres have the right look if they'll fit the mechanics of things. Don't want to go seriously shopping until I can either get a look at one or find out this info...

    Thanks again for the comments guys! Sorry, no chop on this one... Trying not to get in too deep!

    I was able to get a little more work done last night. I got the front suspension unbolted and ready to come out, just have to figure out how to disconnect the steering box from the pitman... With all the 60 year old grime I can't tell where it could come apart. Any suggestions?

    Once this is done I can prep the frame and order my MII!!!

    Pull the nut off of it and then use a pitman arm puller or a pickle fork to separate the arm from the box, very simple. I love it man, I have a 52 styleline special business coupe.     Thanks for the response. Looks like I'll be picking up a 1 5/16" socket and a pitman puller tomorrow!

    BTW - your car looks great raymiller! I love the look of a slammed car on bags... Maybe my next car will get bagged.

    Thanks to raymiller's tip, I got the steering disconnected and front suspension is completely out! Thanks again!

    I ordered my TCI MII last night. I went with the "basic" kit that comes with manual rack, 2" drop spindles, 1" sway bar and single piston calipers. Going to replace rotors with some Stop Tech drilled/slotted ones and that should about do it for the front suspension minus the motor mounts.

    While I wait on these parts to arrive I'm going to finish cleaning the frame up and then start working on my rear axle. I have a lot of brackets and tabs to cut off and then have to weld on some spring perches and sort out the brakes. Not sure if the calipers are any good, but we'll see. New drilled Stop Tech rotors are going in for sure.

    Hopefully I can get all that done before the MII comes in...

    Well I didn't get anything done on the car this weekend because we went out of town for Father's Day. But I was able to spend an hour or so tonight cleaning up the frame and putting on a rust converting primer. Got the passenger side done and should be able to knock out the driver side tomorrow... Baby steps.

    It's been a couple of weeks since my last update so here is what I've been able to do:

    My TCI MII kit arrived way faster than I was expecting (only took a week!) so i had to get all the brackets cut off the front from rails in order for the top spring perches to be welded on. I bolted up the lower crossmember and lower A arms then had to remove the steering column before I could continue with the front suspension.

    I also was able to get started cleaning up my camaro rear end. I had to cut of several brackets from the coil spring type suspension. I was able to get one side completed and all smoothed out and should be able to finish the other side this weekend.

    Sorry I haven't replied sooner.
    The engine mounts were from dirty Dingo; these mount are slotted. which gives you 3" of adjustment forward or backward.

    I didn't have to use the lower perches that came with the kit, that you would normally weld to the car's frame. The stands were wide enough to reach over the frame rails. I just had to scab a 3/4" wide piece of metal to the inside of the frame, so that the round insulators were fully supported.
    As for the weight; mines a cast iron block and the cars sits approx 3/4" taller, then with the 6 cylinder and that's with the stock suspension. Your engine being all aluminum there wouldn't have been any weight issues. You may even be a bit high for your liking with the MII suspension because of how light the LS1 is?
    No I haven't converted the fronts to disk brakes yet; but I plan to. Not that the 11" front shoes aren't stopping me; but they're the typical drum brakes and they can be a bit darty at times on initial application.

    Slowly making progress on my build. Summer is in full swing and I haven't had much time to work on it lately, but here are some pics of what I've done to date.

    Got my TCI front suspension painted and all put together.

    I was also able to gut most of the interior and remove the old 3 speed and closed drive assembly.

    Now I need to finish knocking tabs off my 10 bolt rear end and get it slid under the car and weld on some spring pads. I ordered V8 motor mounts and tranny X-member from Walton's that will be here by the end of the week. Also, I'm going to check out a motor & trans on Wednesday that will hopefully be just what I'm looking for! I'll update with pics when I can.

    BTW I have basically the entire driveline of a 52 chevy now for sale! PM me if your interested in anything.

    I picked up a motor and transmission this past weekend. 2006 5.3 truck motor and 4l60e. Wanted a true 5.7 LS1, but I got a deal I couldn't pass up. Now I have a garage full of parts and a lot of work to do! Hopefully I will get to spend some time on it this weekend!

I have an ls1 motor & 4l60e Trans that I have in my 49 that I hope to soon have running so I can put some millage on it. Are you going to do any upgrades to the rear suspension? If so what kinds?     I was so excited to stumble upon your post. You and I are just about in the same boat. I picked up my 52 earlier this year, as you can see its had a chop done and a lot of body smoothing done. mine had the 216 in it, but it blew only after 20 miles, I was going to start tearing the car down and prepping for an LS1, Must 2, etc... But the guy I bought it off of, felt bad about it and showed up with a 235ci and helped me swap it out. Its so much fun to drive, but im hoping to start with the engine swap this winter. Good luck and keep the pics coming, its good inspiration for me!
