British gentleman came up with the design, mostly for high altitude flight. Published a paper on it. Next thing you know, a German engineer comes up with this great new engine.
Then the British government woke up and let their guy make that baby.

The US was way behind in that area, and our first jet fighters were way behind everybody else.

  2. ^^^^ Yes. The ME 262 was operational just before the end of the second world war.
The British and Americans had jets, but were still in testing at the end of hostilities.
The ME 262 would have done tremendous damage had it come on line sooner, and the Germans had fuel to fly them.
Doc, you need to chime in here, but I think the P47 "jug" was the fastest at the time.

We know that captions can prove inaccurate however the following accompanied that photo:

Hum, there must have been thousands of cars just like the one in the news clip. How do you know it was that one in the movie?

Anyway, the last time I saw it was going into the spring of 1955 and he sent me that news clip some year after, but I lost contact with the guy and never knew if he went to Utah or not. Not sure what newspaper it came from, but here is the news clip:

The late John Fitch is credited for shooting down one of the ME 262's. Something he never made a big deal about.

First flight of the ME 262 was in 1942 but the jets were not so good, first operational was mid 1944. The Gloster Meteor first flew in 1943 and in operation in July 1944.

My Grandfather (moms dad) worked at the secret air base at Meir Aerodrome (Stoke-on-Trent) on the Meteors and my dad was half way through an apprenticeship at Newcastle Works. When he got called up for the Army they asked him what he was working on, he said the Whittle thing I can't talk about.......they said go home, we need you.

    Funny story.

Through our local Aviation Museum I belong to I have met many great people but here is a WWII story.

A bloke arrives at LAX with a big black box destined for Lockheed aircraft Burbank, he finally gets through Lax with his big black box loaded on a truck. He finally arrives in Burbank at about 2:00am. Lockheed security wont let him in because he wont tell them whats in the box. So he parks the truck on Hollywood Way for the night and goes to sleep.
Not long before Burbank PD spots him, wakes him to ask the usual questions, to the response of wat u takin mate, mer wit a box, no sa nuffin.
The truck was towed and the guy put in jail.

Meanwhile Kelly Johnson was fuming because the engine and the installer did not arrive on time. They found out it did arrive at LAX so they put out a Police Watch for the truck.
After about 3 days a Lockheed guy was at the BPD asking for info on an Englishman, the PO said yer we got a guy with a truck but we don't understand him and he won't tell us whats in the box.
So the installer spent 3 day in BPD jail then went to work.

Yes, great shots, maybe you could post them on "Drag Cars in Motion," as we have about run out of gas (and photos) on that threat...lots of famous cars and some unknowns (my favorite) here...

Any of you guys in the New Jersey area remember the Thunderbird ride at Wildwood by the sea amusement park? From 1955-65 they ran Thunderbird JRs on the ride and switch to Mustangs after that. I have pictures showing 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961-63 Thunderbirds but would love to find more. Check the family photo album!

The B-50 used Pratt and Whitney R-4360 4 row radials, the B-29 used the Wright R-3350 2 row engine. The original photo shows an aircraft with nacelles too short to house a 4360, so suspect it is the Navy version B-29.

:D Maybe Doc can help out here.IIRC,the FG1 Corsair made by Goodyear was the first aircraft to exceed 400 MPH in level flight in IIRC 1940?But the fastest AC of WW2 was the Recon version of the Spitfire.Somewhere around 450 MPH at altitude.40,000 feet IIRC.
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

Man, memories flood in; I flew back from Iwo Jima to Naha AB in a smelly KB-50 in 1960 and was it loud. 4360's sounded like out of tuned bull dozers, but were they powerful! After that we lost all the B-29's and KB-50's and never saw another in flight again.

Thank you for posting the photos of early New Westminster.
I grew up near there and it brings back a flood of memories looking at the old Army & Navy store on Columbia Street and the construction of Pattullo Bridge.
